If you look opposite of yellow on the color wheel, you'll find blue/violet.

Stay with your bright theme and go with a bright red or a coral color. Either would go great together.

Bright red...would be a bold choice. You could tie art in the dining room to the bold colors of the walls in the adjacent rooms...=)

There are a lot of great directions to go in...the question is, what kind of space do you want?

Maybe stay away from a color that competes with that yellow intensity. A cream or soft sage green will have some complimentary tone but let the vibrant yellow stay a strong contrast.

I think a nice medium/dark brown would look nice...
or I've seen some nice burgundy and yellow that looks really nice.

A warm light blue could work. If you find a piece of art for the yellow wall that incorporates white, the yellow, the lighter blue and a cobalt blue (which would be the same intensity of color as the yellow), I think the visual from both rooms would tie together.

I really like your yellow walls. Unles you are an LSU fan I think that the purple will be too strong. I like the idea of a very pale green that is yellow based rather than blue based. Good luck.

@jameite, I am thinking of using your wallpaper in a bathroom around a tub. Is there a sealer that can be used so that the paper wont show water splashes?

To answer your question, brown and black.Here's a curtain fabric example that will tie in your colour scheme.


Replace the battleship gray with a shade of brown which is echoed in the curtain fabric


Or a feature wall in black grasscloth will spice up the palette.

Use the Ben Moore app !! You can take a picture of your wall or enter the paint # and it will match it with a few other colours. I'm using it for my new house and its a great help. You can also photograph you furniture or anything you have that inspires you.

Personally I would go for a medium pale blue or a brown like you table. Finding a piece if art or curtains that you like is also a great idea !

Before you do your own exploring on the BM site, I couldn't resist ... Jill and Angelina suggested red.

The one color that has no reason to be even on the same color wheel as the yellow,however the burgandy,garnet,a dark red as in the tile the member displayed for you up from my responce.The dark red color is the new color that is being used with yellows,and the olive color greens as well.

The house had a red dining room and yellow living room when we bought it and in all honesty, we felt like we'd either just walked into a McDonald's or we were living in a box of condiments. Hence the primer/battleship grey.

I do have sheers hung (photo) and we have some art we've yet to hang. A couple of bright abstracts and a cityscape. That rug probably isn't staying there either.


I like the idea of a neutral, perhaps a taupe or sage/olive color. Our end goal is to sell the house and I feel like going too bold or extremely personalized might scare off potential buyers. I LOVE that grasscloth tho!

To answer Angelina's questions, I would like a calming space that has depth and warmth, with clean modern lines.

I've also attached some photos with the furniture we are putting in this super awkward room. It has four entrances and two windows and a fireplace that leaves all the furniture lopsided in the room if you try to work with centering things. =/

Ah, now that paints a picture! Sorry if I'm being boring, but I'm back in my comfort zone here. The adjoining room should be painted BM White Dove, or a shade darker (I presume there is a shade darker, I'm not in the US and don't really know anything about BM colours -- but if it works in the room itself, it will work in the room next to it). Let the yellow in the dining room be its own glory, but bring traces of it into the living room. Neutrals are not boring! You've just overdone the grey. Bring that into the living room too, and you will have created a colour path through the whole house. Good luck!

Also, I will try to take a picture of the room this afternoon if that would help. Be warned, however, it has been the landing zone for the rest of the house. Yikes!

How about dark teal? I like the idea of a rainbow of colors .. one large piece of art to tie them all together.

you are absolutely right about going for neutral such as taupe..
Anything else would either contrast too much with yellow and with your furniture. Plus you are again right, when you say your furniture and rugs already pop, so much so that a further contrast in paint colour would be too retro. You should go contemporary with taupe (neutrals) .

Good morning. I've just looked properly at the new picture of the dining room and see why White Dove is too white for the living room. But oh, the sheers look pretty at that window. As you see below, can't stop myself fiddling on Paint with your room. This seems better -- yes?

Judging from the lovely examples posted by Aimran, you should have no difficulty finding a perfect taupe. (Famous last words, when it comes to choosing paint colours.)

If it helps, we have recently had our master bathroom done (yay) and we asked that they paint the bathroom also. We (I) had to choose quickly and went with Afterglow by Sherwin Williams. It's similar to your yellow. I am now wanting to paint the master bedroom a gray/blue color. Light exposure also is important too. We get a lot of sunshine so I'm thinking it a gray blue. I do love your yellow with the dark table and chairs. Love the idea of gray sofa in the next room.
