Probably the best is a track light ? ^Table and floor lamps are not good choices with kids IMO .

Agree that track lighting would be best. I also advise a cover for the rad, and it can be a burn hazard for kids.

Figured track lighting would be the obvious choice. what about a wide, flush or semi flush mount?

What sort of 'play" are you talking? Will there be a big comfy chair for reading? You may want more than one flush mount if child will be reading etc.

You could try a flush mount, but track lighting might give you more lighting in general for your son's playroom. You could also try recessed lighting. Here are a few of our designs that might just help you with this particular dilemma.
