Are these American persimmon trees still alive?

I received two apricot and two American persimmon trees yesterday, the two American persimmon trees have black roots. Are they still alive?

    Lee Reich has indicated in at least one if his books (Grow Fruit Naturally, i believe) that the roots of American Persimmon can be black and appear dead but definitely are not, so don‘t be dismayed.
