Those lights might be from the 60s, but they are not mid-century. Are you going to change the vanity?

You can have 60’s or Mid Century, but not both. To go Mid the vanity needs to be dark, or better, wood. The pendants have to go. The floor and vanity top are wrong. If those must stay, you need to lean more 60’s. Fun wallpaper, funky pendants( those are way more Victorian than anything).

i like the wallpaper option with lime in it from houssaon because it will coordinate with the yellow tiles in the countertop. also what happened to your toilet paper holder? is it broken? I would definitely remove the window treatment....do you even need anything there for privacy or otherwise? Other than wallpaper, window treatment, tp holder, the mirror and the lights just don't work. I know you want to keep those, but the mirrors look old in a bad way IMO (mainly because of the fact that you can see the seams so easily) and the lights would look fantastic in say, my 1920s Marina style home lol but not in your midcentury space. LOVE all the tile (black, white, and yellow), the vanity, and the toilet. Anything on the ceiling? The wood door is nice because it adds warmth that is missing with only black and white elsewhere.

Mid-century houses aren't all mid-century MODERN ones. MCM is just one style from the era. There were still classic houses and bathrooms being built in the mid-century. To me, this bathroom leans classical (aka traditional) and I bet the vintage light fixture is from the 40s or 50s. I also bet the reason you like this bathroom is that it's cohesive. What does "modern" mean to you though? Because classic and modern are two different styles.

1950s-60s baths with 4x4 tile in solid bold colors were "modern." the tiles in here fit in with mcm, even though they aren't perfectly square (would've just been a unique variation at the time). this is exactly what mcm bathrooms look like. those lights do NOT fit with that...they would have been vintage looking at the time.

@JD, you bring up a good point about tile size. In one pic, it looked like a square wall tile to me but now, on closer look, it reads like a 5 x 7 which would not be original, IIRC. Not a tile expert but I do recall plenty of pics of colourfully tiled 40s bathrooms which I wouldn't describe as "modern" unless "modern" simply conveys contemporary. Thank you all for the feedback! Seems like there’s a mismatch of eras going on. (also, the rest of my house is more muted, neutral and mid century/prairie style).

Seems like I really need to start from scratch and figure out what I like in this space (regardless of style/era) and lean in.

And the black is really unique too. Black and white baths were popular in the 40s (due to reasons surrounding the war), but the main tile would’ve been the white, not the black. In the 60s, black and white wasn’t as widely done, this bath would’ve been avante garde looking because the main color was the black - very bold. So yes quite modern :)

I like the black toilet. Why don’t you like it? Also is the grout the culprit making the tile look dirty? If so, you should have it regrouted. It makes a huge difference
