Irrigation Pump/Controller Wiring Problems

last modified: 5 years ago

I opened up an "inherited" outdoor electrical panel and it appears that the neutrals and grounds are connected improperly. It also looks like the breaker for my pump is the wrong size. Is there anything I could be overlooking? I don't want my "fix" to make the issue worse.

- The panel below is fed from a 100A breaker that serves as a main disconnect from both the meter and the generator. That means the neutral and ground bars must be properly isolated in this panel, right?

- The 120V Rainbird controller is fed from one leg of the pump's 240V breaker

- The 1.5 hp Sta-Rite well pump is defintely 240V

- I think the pump relay is also 240V (not sure)

- The pump wire is 12AWG. I'll downsize the breaker to 20A.

- The neutrals and grounds all go to the neutral bar (!!)

-- I plan to move both the pump and controller grounds to the ground bar

- I'll add red tape to the white wire used for a 240V hot leg

Anything wrong with my plan? Anything else?
