Hi Sally, I'm sorry but this project is fairly old and predates our files being completely electronic so I don't have any specifics on the brick but it was purchased with the white glaze already on it to match some existing brick. It was not finished on site.

I am so very appreciative that you too your time to even answer. I have a brick home and we need to make alterations to fix windows due to the fact that the original owner shoved those barrel dormers on and the window weren’t installed correctly. The original house had a tray type of roof like a French style. We had an architect and we have all of our permits but he hasn’t taken into account the brick that will be missing with the alterations. The house was built in 1974.

I am having a difficult time getting a contractor in my area that I could trust to handle the brick issues. I wish you were in my area. Thank you.

Hmmm ... I do think the proposed changes are a big improvement. It looks to me like you should have no problem salvaging enough brick that would need to be removed to patch the areas that need to be patched. You should be able to salvage the brick between the dormers and the brick around the old entry door which should be plenty of material for patching those 4 areas. It requires a little extra care during demo but would be well worth it to not to have to find new brick to match the old. This doesn't seem like it should be very difficult. Maybe that helps. That's not typically how it's done. Chances are that your house is just standard gray mortar which is simply made by mixing sand and portland cement. Mortar can also be mixed with pigments to color the mortar to match an existing color. The new mortar should match the old pretty closely. If it looks a lot "newer", the mason can usually take care of this by washing the whole front of the house with a muriatic acid wash to clean the whole front so everything looks fresher and matches more closely. I have also done what some people would call silly things like literally rubbing mud/dirt on fresh grout to dull it down. Painting grout is not something I have ever heard of.
