Are stackable washer and dryers a good idea? Pros and cons.

our current washer and dryer are in a downstairs bathroom on the first floor. we live in a 160 yr old home . Thinking of hiding them somehow with cabinets and wondered if stackables would work better. A concern i have is that we’re in our 60’s- would i need a stool to reach the dryer?

Ours can go side by side, but we intentionally stacked them. When we had side by sides the top of the dryer became a dumping ground. Now I can put the basket I use to bring the laundry into the laundry room on top of the dryer while clothes are in the machines. We put a tall narrow cabinet next to the stacked machines on one side to hold laundry and cleaning products and a table on the other side with a hanging rod above. I could theoretically fold clothes on the table, but I prefer to take the clothes into the bedroom and use the bed to fold everything. I’m 5’3” and can get the clothes out of the dryer. We have had the machines stacked for 9 years.

Mine are stacked and that is the only configuration that would work in the space. I am 5" 0" and I can reach the dryer no problem. If a sock is stranded at the back I do have to stand on my toes though. :)

Consideration for stacking: do you have a convenient place to fold things from the dryer (it got old very quickly for me when I had to take things from the dryer to another room to fold) and even more importantly, serviceability. When they are stacked and one of the machines needs service, if you can't easily get behind them, they will have to be moved and/or unstacked.

When the washer goes belly up a few years down the road, odds are that the still good dryer won't be 'stackable' with the new washer.

If you have the space, I think side by side is WAY better. You have space on top to fold things. If one of the machines needs work, or even just to be moved, it's way easier to do. You don't have to reach so high to use the dryer, etc., etc.

We are doing the LG Washtower. It is the same size as a side by side as far as what it can hold, but it is only 73" high. Much lower than normal stackers because they moved the control on both the upper and lower unit to the middle. any time I have changed my dryer I have always changed my washer. I don't think you should worry about the risk of them being one unit. Also, if you do that, you free up 27-30" on the side and could do a counter and have usable space above and below!
