If you do the treads, you could always add an area rug at the top. Would probably need to have it custom cut and bound but still cheaper than a runner and carpet. I think the treads are more current looking too unless you have a very formal home.

I would find a runner that goes up the steps and stops on that square landing. Then find a complementary runner for the hallway.

I would start the runner under the top step and take it to the bottom. You don't need carpet on the landing.

It depends how much you want to spend. I think continuing it to the hall would look nice. Make sure to pick a carpet pattern that won't matter if you turn it to change direction (unless a pattern direction change won't bother you).

You don't want a loose rug at the top of the stairs as it would be a slipping hazard. Just put the runner on the stairs where you need it and leave the upper hallway bare.

I like rugs so I would not leave it bare. A hallway runner as well as landing runner. They can all be the same or complement each other. It isn't going to be loose or a tripping hazard if you use a gripper pad or tape. I have rug tape on all my rugs and they do not move. I think the dog will appreciate it as well.

Whatever you do ..i would get a tiny lightweight..cordless vacuum…even if it is just for the stairs .

We think you probably only need a runner on the stairs. Having a lose rug up top on the landing could cause people to trip.
