Powder Room Location?

last modified: 5 years ago

We are in the planning stages of remodelling the ground floor interior and would love some opinions for a better location of the powder room or any other design layout ideas!.

Very open to taking down walls or putting new ones up. Already had a structural engineer sign off on opening the kitchen/sitting room into the rear extension to give a more open concept kitchen.

    Dimensions would be most helpful.

Powder room is in a very typical location. What doesn’t work for you?

    ....

You can flip it to the other side of the staircase.

    Or

Add one on the opposite wall of the kitchen (probably more cost effective because you have plumbing there)

    Or

You can have it put in the back of the house in the library

    ——-

Honestly, I would probably just add another bathroom instead. The one that’s there is there. I wouldn’t pull it out. Just add another small one in a more functional, private spot.

Meant to add this to the above comment.

It looks to me like the photo room is in a convenient spot. What jumped out at me was three different kinds of flooring on the first floor.

I think you should reduce it down to two kinds--hardwood, and tile or slate in the kitchen and the back areas.

@HU-187528210 The location doesnt bother us too much, its the size more so - it feels as big as an airplane bathroom. Unfortunatley, the entire back of the house is floor to ceiling glass, so it seems a less feasible location.

I've added the idea we have been playign around with. In order to try and create a more private area, we've added a hallway to get to the powder room. We have considered putting deep Pantry cabinets on the wall in front of the bathroom as it would be facing into the kitchen.

Nancy R z5 Chicagoland We will only have two types of flooring when we come to remodel :)

Any comments, ideas or suggestions for improvements much appreciated.

Can you line up the wall to the end of the stairs to gain more space? then do a pocket door or barn door (maybe centered ? toilet on one side sink on the other against the stair wall ) this way its not a tight fit to either mechanicals and from the exterior it looks more balanced - also if the door is open everything is more "hidden)

Hi @deb s the idea was to have pantry cupboards in front of the bathroom (which would line up with the stair wall but i think ultimatley it might feel weird (for us and guests) to have a bathroom behind food stoarge if its not executed well...

The location could not get any better in that plan, but I would make it a little bigger by aligning the wall with the toilet on it with the edge of the stairs opposite.

In your plan, I don't think you need to have 2 doors to get into the powder room. The wall is enough separation since you don't see the toilet when you look through the door. If the door swings to the other wall, it would give shorter sight lines of the door is left ajar when the room is not in use.

There used to be codes that required two doors between a kitchen and a toilet when they were adjacent like the last plan. But as far as I know this is no longer the case.
