I never thought of Amaryllis as the only ones I know are the Hippeastrum which are commonly, but incorrectly, called Amaryllis.

FYI. The waller has now given me a confirmed start date of 4/10. I hope this isn't a Cornish Dreckly date. :-)))))

I’m pretty sure it is not a species of Nerine, and like floral, I think it is closer to true Amaryllis, however it looks like a hybrid.

I must do a bit of research.

Afaik A belladonna is the only one hardy outdoors anywhere in the UK. I believe there are some cultivars but I’d doubt a public park would be able to afford them. https://gardenseeker.co.uk/bulbs/amaryllis/amaryllis-belladonna-bulbs.html

I'm not too sure about the garden's finances.

I first discovered its existance while trying to locate Wollemia nobilis growing in Cornwall.

Spoke to a member of staff who showed me where it was tucked away. VERY un-noticable if you were unaware of it.

On a subsequent visit, I found a second one, also tucked away.

When I popped in yesterday, I found another 2 small ones that must have been planted this summer, going by their size.

W. nobillis are definately not cheap.

If it is a council park it’ll be strapped for cash by definition. Which park is it?

Over here one of the common names for Nerine sarniensis is Guernsey lily!

isiochroma. There are, apparently only 2 Amaryllis spp., A. belladonna & A. paradisicola. As far as I can determine, via the web, A. belladonna is hardy in MOST of the UK, but A. paradisicola must be greenhouse grown.

Nerine sarniensis, likewise, appears to require greenhouse cultivation in the UK. Nerine bowdenii, though is UK hardy,

Amaryllis & Nerine, although both genera are members of the same Tribe, the Amaryllideae, they actually belong in different subtribes, the Amaryllidinae and the Strumariinae respectively.

Yes, I am all too familiar wirh A. belladonna; here in the SF Bay area it is a roadside weed. It grows into the American Pacific Northwest, and even though several online sites of some authority state it will not take much frost, it will. I belive the key is a fast-draining soil; in sandy or rocky soils it survives and goes native.

I did a bit of a deep dive at the wonderful Pacific Bulb Society’s website ( https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org ) and was looking for hybrids with Amaryllis. Both Lycoris and Nerine hybrids yield beautiful results, but the ones with Lycoris will probably be more frost tolerant.

Also: one site says Nerine bowdenii can take 5 deg. F / - 15 deg. C
