open shelves between windows

We are remodeling the kitchen of a 1950 condo which has very limited storage space. We removed a wall between the kitchen and dining room to make the rooms seem more spacious

which resulted in losing even more storage as there were a few cabinets on that wall. Instead we will have a small freestanding cabinet/worktop (48x24 - hardly big enough to qualify as an island). Also, we now have the large dining room window and the kitchen window on the same wall with 19 inches between them. I've thought about how to use that space to tie the kitchen and dining space together. One of my ideas was using a long narrow art piece, another idea was creating a attractive bulletin board with family pictures. Now my idea is shelves on the wall to provide extra storage. There is 19 inches between the windows and I figure I could do 15 inch wide shelves, 10 inches deep, with each of the 4 shelves at the same line as the window panes. This would be enough for stacking the everyday plates, a shelf for cookbooks, a couple of attractive serving bowls and maybe wine glasses. I need advice on whether this will cut up the wall too much to have something sticking out of it instead of tying the windows together as I'd hoped. Are any of my other ideas better? What are your ideas? I would love to have the wall look less like what it actually is - 2 separate rooms. All ideas and comments are gratefully accepted.
