Is the under counter space sized for an undercounter washer or dryer?

Hmmm, it could be. Didn’t realize they still made those. The total size of the gap is 32”W x 33”H. All the water and gas hookups are under the window though. I’d probably have to relocate them?

I don't think the area under the cabinet was intended for the washer/dryer. It looks like they just built some storage that could be utilized next to the machines. You can have a flat piece of wood installed to extend the cabinet face so it isn't an open area that can't be cleaned.

If you replace the washer dryer with front loaders, you could put a countertop over the machines and run it around the corner over the cabinets if those were rebuilt. Maybe all you need to do though is just look at the cabinet area. If you removed the upper cabinets and moved your hanging pole there it would be a much more functional space. Depending on how much hanging you do, you might want one upper cabinet and the rest hanging area, or hanging with a shelf like this example. Be really careful to get a licensed contractor from someone you know personally if you're wanting to make big changes. There are a lot of terrible contractors with fake reviews online in this area.

I have a similar setup, except a slightly larger room. The hole under the counter was probably for laundry baskets (that's what the previous owner used ours for). I removed all the cabinets and replaced them with floor to ceiling Ikea wardrobes for storage (ours also acts as our mudroom off the garage). I will be adding a shelf above our washer/dryer as well under the window; looks like you have enough room, or you could make a free standing shelf to cover up all the hookups. I also removed our door because it made it look so cramped and took up so much space. I hate barn doors, but unless you want to go through the trouble of installing a pocket door, looks like removing your door could make the space feel larger as well.

And yes, I agree. We actually found one through recommendations that was terrible. We wanted to hire him for our remaining projects too, but now I never want him in my home again!

Ah yes, your configuration looks very similar to mine! That makes sense that it was for laundry baskets, but how would you get to them in mine? We’re washers and dryers really that much smaller before that there would have been a gap previously? Right now the dryer is about 1.5 inches from the counter/gap, so there’s no way to really access it :(

I love the cabinets you chose and was thinking the same thing for a little over-the-washer shelf!
