My Reusable Beer Advent Calendar

last modified: 3 years ago

Hi there

(A bit OT for RP, but I thought you'd be interested. I'm posting this on other threads too.)

A few years ago, Morrison's (a supermarket in the UK) started selling a Beer Advent Calendar. It may have been done by others, but this was the first time I came across it - one beer for each day in December up to Christmas. Genius! It was only a cardboard case, but I thought it was great.

So then, I thought - why not build a reusable one, which I could fill myself?

I looked round the internet, but couldn't find anything that really worked for me. So I decided to build it myself.

I've put together a web site which gives full instructions on how to build one, if anyone is interested. Start now, and you've got just over two months to finish it - should be enough...!

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

That's brilliant! I've never seen a beer Advent calendar before, but Costco stores in the US have a wine Advent-ure calendar that comes out about this time of year with 24 small bottles to try. These sell out incredibly quickly so I have yet to get my hands on one. I love this idea.

Well, I suppose it's not compulsory to use beer. Build one of these, and buy one of those Costco wine jobbies, and load one from the other...

I'd love to see the Costco wine advent calendar make it to the UK.

I'd build a chocolate cupcake advent calendar.

I would need an Advent Refridgerated Calendar to hold chocolates during the hot weather! No chance that I could build that though...

Just bought a German Brewer’s Beer Advent Calendar at Costco yesterday!

    I agree Caroline!

Brilliant......but if you are going to drink it you would have to stay a day ahead in order to chill it....maybe open it in the morning, chill and drink in the evening.

Those little bottles of wine are pretty much wine only suitable for cooking, if you don't mind cooking with not so good wine.

Wish i had the woodworking skills to make that!

That is indeed what I do.

I think you're being a bit unkind to the wine, btw. You can, of course, get rubbish little bottles - but judging by the reviews, the half-bottles in the Costco advent calendar are actually pretty good. Certainly, here in the UK, you can get half-bottles of good wine, albeit a bit pricey compared to the same wine by the bottle. I'd fill my advent calendar with those with no concerns, if my wife and I drank a bit more wine.

As for woodworking skills - it's actually not at all hard to build, and there are full instructions on the website - but the right tools do help. Do you have a friend who might do the basic building, if you pay for the timber? They might even build one for themselves as well :) The finishing off is within anyone's grasp, and that's the bit that makes it uniquely yours.

Love this. I've been seeing mostly cosmetics advent calendars, and last year my parents were given one that contained mini-jars of jam - I have that one and have been playing with the idea of filling it with little Christmas baubles and giving it back to them to reuse. However, a permanent one is so much more fun.
