After installing Closetmaid wire shelving in all closets,pantry and laundry room i smelled a strong chemical odor every time I opened the pantry door. At first I thought it was something I stored in the pantry. After removing all stored goods in the pantry the smell was still there. I didn't think it could be possible that the wire shelving could give off such a strong chemical smell. I removed the the pantry shelving and the smell was gone. I called Closetmaid and spoke to them and they said it was old stock that Lowe's had. I returned the shelving to Lowes and exchanged it to no avail. After some research I found that the smell was coming from the vinyl coating on the wire that is off-gassing. Closetmaid refused to address this problem even though the toxic smell from the off-gassing does have harmful effects, especially on children and elderly people. I am now removing all of the Closetmaid shelving and replacing it with something other than wire.It's a shame Closetmaid puts money before peoples health.
