How are you going to access the switch box? The "cleanest" way to do this would to change that box from a 2-gang to a 3-gang, and add your new switch there. Use the power feed for the existing two switches for the third. Another way would be to not change the box, but replace the existing light switch with a double switch and proceed as above.

Leviton R62-01755-0WS Decora 15 Amp 3-Rocker Combination Switch. A single wire provides power to all three switches. This is not a solution if the fan requires the wall switch to adjust its speed or the recessed lights need a dimmer.

@mtvhike...sounds like a plan. Is that plan okay for a dimmer switch?

If you have a two-gang box, you can put a Lutron MACL-LFQH (for the fan and its light) in gang #1 and Lutron DVCL-153PR (for the new, recessed lights) in gang #2.

You aren't being clear as to what you have now. My assumption was that you had a two-gang electrical box (example). If this is the case, you could put the Lutron MACL-LFQH in the left-hand position (gang #1) andLutron DVCL-153PR in the right-hand position (gang #2).

If you continue to use your 2-gang box, then one position would have to be a double switch, which could be for the two lights. Of, as wdcruise suggests, a fan light/switch combo plus a dimmer. Or you could go with the 3-gang version, where two of them would be dimmers.

Why are there 3 romex wires coming into this box?

I'll guess:

One brings power to the electrical box from the circuit breaker. The one with the red wire goes to the fan and its light (that cable has four wires, its black wire is connected to one switch, and its red wire is connected to the other switch, right?). One goes to another switch or outlet whose function has nothing to do with the light or fan.

Note: those are simple switches so you don't want to replace them with the Lutron MACL-LFQH. Use the Leviton R62-05224-2WS instead.

You need to remove the two gang box. take a sawzall and cut the nails holding it to the stud. you can use the 120v feed thats already feeding the fan. make a pigtail for that. youll need to find the wall sil in the attic, drill a hole and send down another switch leg for the new lights.

youll also need a 3 gang cut in or old work box. cut the drywal to fit the new box.
