If that's a pic of your in-progress kitchen, I like what you have. The wood is a soft break from what will otherwise be a giant endless sea of white. Get some hardware on the doors, choose an eye-catching splash and it'll look great.

ETA: But I'm confused why you didn't choose white cabinets if what you want is white cabinets. From what I understand, a quality paint job done correctly on kitchen cabs is expensive, so if you want to paint the cabs white just to solve a wall paint problem, it's probably cheaper to just have the walls painted. But if your heart's desire is white cabinets, that's another story.

This kitchen is extra white. Looks good. I think you’ll need to do contrasting lowers or island.

@porkchop_z5b_MI thank you! It was super expensive to get any paint done through the builder so we are doing it after. I have my heart set on white cabinets but don't really care about the paint.. but also don't want to pay to get the entire house painted! Which I feel like I might just need to do...

My husband is a painting contractor and does a lot of new construction homes and right now paint is both hard to get and astronomical in price. That is why painting from the builder is so high. His subs are raising their prices as material costs rise and availability wanes.

Get the cabinet color you want and then, when you are in the home, and can judge by natural light, throughout the day, pick the wall colors that will work best for you.

order the stick-on samples to really get the feel in the room.........I have 4 stuck on my living room wall right now and another in my dining room.

@Sherry Brighton I think I decided that's what my strategy is going to be... going to go with Pure White for the cabinets and a smoky/gray blue for the island and cross my fingers it works with the walls. If it doesn't I'll convince my husband to paint them after we move in ;)

I'm sorry that it's so costly to paint through the builder and get it done from the start Our 2200sf new build will cost $2650 to paint (not exactly the color I want but better than free SW Super White) through the builder. Having gone through the whole home interior paint process, on a 2013 home, I didn't want to deal with repainting later on.

A house I painted in Fort Worth 1800 sf was $5500 pre-pandemic. What does it cost to paint your house through the builder?

@Jen K (7b, 8a) To do the entire house (3000 sq ft) was $8k and then to do the cabinets it was $5k so a total of $13k. Kinda expensive but not awful. But I hated all the paint colors and they only do a flat finish :( Our quotes to do it externally were $4k for the entire house and $4k for the cabinets. I probably would've done through the builder just for convenience if they had a color or finish I liked but if I'm going to pay that much I want it done right! We're just going to stay in our current house a couple of extra weeks to let the painter get it done before we move in

Olivia, I agree that it is best to do it yourself if you do not want a flat finish or do not like the paint choices given for that high price.

$1.33 sf is cheap. Paint is nuts in price. Find out what paint the independent contractor is using. Most decent paint is costing contractors 65-85 dollars a gallon. Fives are a little less but you'll wait for them to be in stock. Hubby has waited up to 4 weeks for materials on the new construction homes he does.

Just the three gallons for ceiling, wall and trim for my kitchen reno (at hubby's prices) was almost $200.00. That is about $1.00 sf just for the materials in my kitchen. We did use BM Aura.

@Sherry Brighton wow, good to know, thank you!!! I'll ask. When we went to SW they said they didn't have any samples in stock and haven't for 10 months. Suggested we go to Ace or Lowes with the colors we liked and they can make the same formula. Crazy times.

Olivia - I agree. The price for a builder to put in a color I knew I could live with, because I experimented with that color and our previous home, makes the investment worth it for me. If it was just gray's I could pick from, I would have gone with the free super white coat.

I, too, hate flat walls and when we repaint in 5 years I'll go eggshell.

At least with the new house you take the free ugly color they give you and then you paint before you move in.

Keep in mind they won't be exact colors samples because they won't be using SW bases. Each paint company's proprietary base will be just a little different tint to start.
