What is coating this masonry wall?

Hello!
We purchased a 1916 Craftsman style house that has an addition built in 1921. The addition didn't match the style of the house at all and looks slapped on, so we're planning on removing it. When doing the first round of demolition today, I learned that it's not lath and plaster inside of fir planks (like most old homes in my area), but is brick!!
It appears that the two story addition might be structural masonry. All of the bricks have a thick black coating on the inside. What do you think they coated the bricks with? It's not mold, it reminds me of tool dip or asphalt to be honest. Pictures in comment.
Thanks!
