to light it perfectly even, you would need to back it with something similar to a light box (like what graphic designers use for tracing). it would need to be custom made so it looks attractive from the back. unfortunately this would block the window so you'll never get to see it from the inside.

a different idea would be to hang a frosted white glass globe pendant about 1-2 feet behind it. I stress frosted glass, which will diffuse the light. it will only appear perfectly centered when you're standing right in front of the window, but it will light it better than a LED strip, and you will still be able to enjoy the stained glass from the inside of the house.

to get an idea of how this would look-- how does it currently look from the inside with that porch light on? it will be similar to that.

I totally get why the LED strips aren’t giving you the result you want—they tend to create hotspots and uneven lighting, which isn’t ideal for stained glass. If you want that even glow across the entire piece, the best way to backlight it is with an ultra-thin LED light panel instead of strips.

• Edge-to-edge even lighting – No dark spots or harsh bright spots, just a soft, diffused glow.
• Ultra-thin (1/4" or 5/16") – So it can be discreetly placed behind the stained glass without looking bulky.
• Custom sizing & shapes – If your window hanging is circular, a round LED panel can be made to match, or a square panel slightly larger than the piece would work too.

How to Mount It

If the stained glass is framed or in a hanging setting, you could:

1. Mount an LED panel to the back of the frame so it evenly lights up the entire surface.
2. If it’s hanging in a window, suspend a frosted acrylic diffuser between the LED panel and the stained glass to soften the light even more.
3. Use a dimmable LED driver so you can adjust brightness levels depending on how much glow you want.
