Rescuing a crab apple tree

Near the foot of our driveway there is an old crab apple tree in a depression which needs some tlc. It's pretty well shaded by other trees, including at least one tall white pine tree very near it and I was thinking about removing it - it's a "lollipop" style tree, which has no low branches. I've trimmed the dead branches I can reach, but there are many I can't without a ladder.

When I pull in to my driveway, I go about 20 feet and then make a sharp turn; this crab apple tree is right in front of me and in the spring, it has lovely blooms. I also see some fruits once in a while.
