Arborvitae ' Primo'

I really like this little guy .

I wish I had a forest of them .

Mine started out poorly . A large mass of fiberous roots that I didn't have time to straighten out .

By fall it started to look like crap - so I dug it up (boy , was it dry,,even though I hand watered it)

I pulled & tugged till I could spread out the roots ....half of them came out

replanted ,, mucho watering,, it survived

I have two of these, perfect fillers for congested spots. Here's one of them earlier this year, near bottom right.

They are pretty darn cute!! I would also like to find one to grow in a container. My local nursery brings in a lot of stock from Iseli.....I'm gonna ask them to bring in one for me.

Every time I see one of these at a retailer I sigh and pass on by. The foliage reminds me of C. obtusa, which I find so attractive, but is not winter hardy where I'm at. T. o. 'Primo' is hardy, but deer pressure makes arborvitae almost impossible to grow without fencing or other extreme measures.

I cannot get obtusa to grow in my yard ,, don't know what it is about

Yes, cool plant. I'm on my third one after killing the first two. I'm determined to make it work.

so Dean , what did the roots look like ?

did you figure out what went wrong ?

Hi Ron. I don't remember the roots for the first two specifically, but I always do root surgery on container grown stock. Both of them were via the ACS as part of their Conifer of the Year program - shipped directly from Iseli, I think. I plopped the second one down in the hole from the first one; they were at the top of a slope in amended soil in an area partially under a crape myrtle, and I suspect they dried out at some point during summer. The third has survived the longest - it's in a less sheltered location but a wetter one.

Don't you hand water all new plantings ?

Well... that depends, mostly on the distance from my house (where the hose is) to the planting. Otherwise I rely on irrigation. Obviously, it's not a perfect system.

Anyone have a larger 'Primo' you have had growing now? I've had 3 in different sizes, and mine end up losing the tight structured shape over a few years. A larger branch dies, and the many side branches spread out some leaving dead gaps. They are pretty congested, hope others have better results.

I stumbled across Primo this year, so of course I picked one up. I'm wondering how big yours has become - want to site it properly.

Mine still only 2 ft. growing real slow. I have seen others grow faster.

Woo hoo!! That’s a nice sized Primo.

Here’s mine this year 2026. It was planted 2017 as a tiny 1gal. It may not look like it but it’s five feet tall now. They are indeed quite slow.

I killed my second one and planted another this spring. I think I may need more.
