Definitely pea family. Pod & seeds look honeylocust-like, but prb'ly other pea-family species have similar pods.

Lots of 'em do - Cercis, Laburnum, Cassia, Gleditsia, Maackia, Gymnocladus, Albizia, etc.

GG, sure, but not 8" long. That'd be honeylocust or perhaps some other pea-family member I'm not familiar with in Texas.

I'm in Ben's camp - not Cercis, Laburnum Maackia, Albizia, nor Gymnocladus. I don't get to see many/any woody Cassia to know.

Sophora sp. and other TX possibilities in pea family may - but that appears dead on for Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis to me, even though this species doesn't exactly crave wetlands preserve conditions in the Ohio River valley region.

we have some Gleditsia triacanthos in the city, IMe they do have a clear main trunk and very strong branches which tend to grow horizontally, I know that the angle could change with age, but still the canopy is not too typical for Gleditsia. The seed pods tend to be somewhat wavy or curled/ twisted.

is there a chance for pics of the trunk and bark?
