I have a carpet rake and it really does the job. When cleaning my carpets I rake, vacuum, clean then rake again when the carpet is still wet. My daughter also uses mine when she does her carpets. I was cleaning my carpets this week until the dang machine died. Ugh. I don't do it all the time but I will rake before normal vacuuming.

Yea it appears looking at my photo close up the carpet fibers are weaving themselves into little "dreadlocks". The rake should help unweave and straighten them.
