We recently bought an older home with a fairly new gas-fired boiler and the original radiators. We love this heating system, but have two issues. It's difficult to find temperature stability. A 68 or 70 setpoint during the day is perfect. At night, around 65 or 66 seems fine. But it seems to take a long time in the morning to heat up, and we end up turning the heat up higher to warm it up, then turning it down. On top of that, the thermostat is off by nearly 4 degrees, so that complicates things. When we replace the thermostat, should we get an auto-setback one and program it to turn down a couple of hours before we go to bed and up a couple of hours before we get up?

I should probably mention that we have a stone house with 8" thick stone walls and plasterboard; no insulation. Once the house does warm up, it stays pretty warm, sometimes too warm!

Second issue is that our third-floor attic, which is finished, has radiators, but no heat coming through. We've made sure the valves are open. We had someone tell us that probably means the new boiler, put in before we bought the house, is undersized. Is there anything to be done to get heat up there? When we were running our mini-split system before it got too cold to do so, we had most of the radiators in the living spaces off, and a minor amount of heat was getting up to the attic. But not since we turned off the mini-split.
