Settle on main new furniture before you do anything else. And, yes, a larger rug would be good. Angled corner fireplaces are always challenging. Once main furniture is selected then a color palette will emerge. The walls of your hearth definitely are fighting with your warm stone. A darker tone that picks up dark color of your stone would be great. Art and accessories come last along with new wall color. An additional chair would be nice. A swivel would be my choice. There are some nice swivel recliners that might be worth investing in for comfy TV watching. Once you post room measurements, I can do a scale drawing that will help define furniture sizes.

I think you room is awesome! What is it about winter/being holed up that makes us want change/new/fresh just for the new of it? Your configuration is perfect for how you use this space!! I think where your TV is hung is a personal choice. If it were too high for you and yours you would know. I don't think you need the art work flanking the TV, find another wall for it. Since all the other pictures are framed I would look into framing them if they stay in that space. You have a winning set up now go go shopping and swap out what you find you love, i.e. sofa for sofa. I have to second the suggestion to finish the room by dressing the windows. Curtains add so much softness and makes the space looked lived in vs just moved in.

I don't know that your furniture needs replacing as much as you need a bigger rug with more color. Even if you get new furniture, get a bigger and more colorful rug. You've got lots of brown tones, now you need a color to bring life into the room. Use a favorite color so you fall in love with the room every time you enter it.

You have a lovely home.  I was looking at your ideabook and saw these two pics that lean rustic… is that the vibe you are wanting?  I think that would look great with some of the other elements you already have..  I could see lots of textures… cowhide, fur, plaid perhaps, wicker baskets…

I forgot to measure how wide (or deep) the room is from TV wall to back long wall. It's 17 feet.

I like the green in the kitchen and think it would great repeated in the living area. It's a very good colour with the stone of your fireplace.

With your large deep windows, maybe you would like a place to sit right by the window and enjoy the light. I'm thinking that maybe you could omit the table behind the sofa, and instead put a table right up to the window with a comfortable chair in front of it. In my house it would be used for doing crossword puzzles, crafts, sit with the laptop and enjoy looking outside.

I am not a fan of the white trim on the face of the hearth, and think it should be the same wood as the mantle, or at least painted a similar brown brown. The bright white draws attention down to the floor area, and it should be on the fireplace itself, where I also simplified your decor.

Clear the walls, lower the TV and find a new rug. Get a neutral (not black) sofa and a pair of comfy upholstered armchairs in a tone on tone print. Some of your floor vents prevent drapery, but you could add softness with faux or real roman shades. They might be where you can pull some of the kitchen green into the room. New mats on some of the art could also pull that color into the space, as could accessories like pillows and throws.

Can I get someone to suggest the size of area rug I should get?

I would minimally do a 9x12 based on size of room.  May help to tape it out on the floor.  Looks like your current one is 8x10, but confirm.  To me you should go bigger than your current one.

Oh well, it's his green, but what about same paint on wall farther into living room - behind sofa? maybe another wall too idk... you might like to take down black/white photos then.

Haha! Those are small “drink” tables. Or garden stools. Just table for cup of coffee or a book. That type thing.

Ok. I think I finally have it pretty accurate. Each square equals one square foot. I can see using a 9 x 14 rug or even 10 x14. Sofa needs to be 82-84 wide and 38 deep. I put your cubby cabinet behind the sofa and two lamps. You have options on placement of chairs. Depends on how many people want to watch TV here. The coffee table is about 44” long x 24” wide. That’s max size. And depends on chairs chosen. I would lower TV OR take it off wall and set on console. You could use an arc lamp for ambient lighting too. I will gather some examples. Bbl

Some ideas. Keep palette fairly neutral and fireplace stays focal point.

Blending stone and flooring with lighter neutrals. Punch up with some accents and textures.

Put it together a bit better. We can style mantel with some of your black and white art and a plant possibly.

Rebecca, I believe this is what @Flo Mangan was suggesting. I used black furniture instead of the brown leather because that is what was available to me in my program. The rug is a 10" x 12" and the couch is 84" as Flo suggested. Hope this helps.

First of all, what are your floors? They are gorgeous!

I think trimming out the fireplace hearth in wood (like the mantle) or painting the part above the baseboard the same color as the wall would help. Right now it's distracting.

I think Flo's suggested layout looks really nice. For me personally, I don't love angled furniture so I might keep a sofa in the same position as your current one. And then I'd flank it with two chairs (one facing the kitchen, one facing the window) so that you could have a conversation space if you wanted.

As far as "hodge podge" of art, I find having consistent frames on all of the art helps bring them together. You could add black frames to all of the unframed pieces and that might help tie things together. I also think having art approximately the same size on either side of the TV would help it be more balanced.

Sometimes with angled features in a room such as this fireplace, angled furniture is welcome consistency.

Oohhh… I really like that angled layout. It takes full advantage of both the fireplace and the TV and looks very cozy.

Well you can start moving around the furniture and deciding for yourself you can angle the couch over by the window but leave space so you can have your console behind it unless you angle your sofa on the left side of the room face in the fireplace see which one you like best or if none keep the rangement you have cuz I like both

I also like that the angled layout puts the 2 corners of the sofa near the windows, near the light.

Summer came quickly and I put the house on hold. Now I'm back at it. I painted the kitchen and living room Divine White by SW today, I have a 9x12 rug on order (14' creeped too far into the kitchen table area), 1 chaise lounge and 1 accent chair on order. Will work couch and swivel chair next. I am painting TV wall Naval by SW and painting the white space below fireplace black tomorrow. Could you post new photos with new wall color please. My initial thought is for a satin finish on space below hearth top surface.

@Mae Day Organizing and Interior Design and @Flo Mangan I used satin on the walls. A friend who has an eye for this stuff also said satin since it's large area. Furniture is crammed into middle of room and it's mess in here. The feather above the breakfast table (face in palm) it's funny I don't notice it except in pictures, long story, but I will take it down today. I'm about to repaint the entire house this color, so hopefully it's a great base color. I picked it because I have it in our formal room with a dark gray accent wall and it looks really good and sort of barely there.

Thought I should FINALLY post an 'after' pic of the redecorating. I love it and it's super functional. Every piece of furniture gets used on a regular basis. The dark blue wall conflicts a bit with the brown fireplace, but we liked it so much for watching TV against the dark wall, that I left it alone and worked the blue into the room.

Looking good. The drape rod is in the mirror...just wondering if the mirror is centered? If better?

@happyleg the initial hope for the mirror was to reflect the outdoors from the windows, but it's very heavy and would need to be flat on the fireplace or almost tilted down a bit, so just went with it the way it is. I tried it in various locations on the fireplace. We are earthquake prone here and even the way it is makes me a bit nervous. I put a piece of duct tape on the back in the hopes it will keep it in place should we get a big shaker!

At the hardware store there's this mirror Hardware that you screw to the wall and you slide the mirror on it otherwise you might have to use 3M tape that's for heavy duty you got to make sure you have the heavy duty one for the weight it has to hold

Hello Rebecca, we live in earthquake country as well. There is a product called clear museum gel that we use. Museums use it with good luck, and it has worked really well for us as well. There is also a product called clear QuakeHold! Gel. it is distributed by www.readyamerica.com. I’m sure you can find it online. Happy new year!🎆🥳

I have also been able to find museum gel at the Ace Hardware store. You may have better luck trying to get it there. Best wishes.
