1930's Cottage - What is under the Cedar siding?

I have a 1930 cottage in western NY. It's on the lake. It has the original cedar shingle siding exterior (but has been painted multiple times - yes, I know - WHY?). I want to replace the siding but I have no idea what is underneath the shingles (i.e. is it plywood, or something else) and I want to insulate it better (thinking blown-in insulation) before or during the replacing. Anyone have knowledge of how these kinds of cottages were built back then and what I might find under the cedar shingle siding?
