That goes outside, that is the patio. No entry to it from the kitchen.

When walking in front door, is barn door straight ahead? Would a pass- look-through opening in shared wall work?

so yes we had the dining room in there and it was beautiful. But I didn't like having to walk around through the living room to get to it.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. Would you like to expand the kitchen? I agree with your husband as long as it fits in your budget (load bearing walls, plumbing). Those walls, especially the closet, close off the space.
