Need help with drop zone.

last modified: 4 years ago

Space is 15.5” x 32” next to exterior door that opens directlyinto our den.

Suggestions?

Pictures of whole room included to give view to overall space.

Rug / Card catalog must stay but all else is fair game. We are currently waiting on a Sixpenny L sectional to replace the sofa and matching chair. My husband wants to keep his recliner, but we’ll see…

Note the tv console storage is important to us as it holds our everyday items and hides our chraging station for everyones electronics so a replacement would need storage too.

I honestly think you are already doing a great job with your drop zone - it looks like you have kids, yet the room is very tidy! You really haven’t given yourself much room for a drop zone. You could replace the apothecary cabinet with something like an armoire that could provide more useful storage for coats and backpacks, and get a media console that is up on legs where you can put shoes on a boot tray that slides under the console.

Can you move the TV to the sofa wall? It just seems that with the size of the room, it's a bit cramped on that TV wall.

What about working with a carpenter/cabinet maker on a custom built-in for that wall that integrates tall narrow storage on two sides and the tv in the middle? That way, you could center the television in the space and still have room for storage on both sides and underneath.

At minimum, I'd go for more hooks, wider spaced, and a tiered zone for storage of shoes and other drop items. Could do separately rather than built in.

(I have gotten things like this from Amazon, and they come in 15-30" versions)

Thanks all. i like the idea of a leggy console to put shoes under.

Cant center tv on existing wall due to the door swing or move it due to cables coming in on that wall.

Thinking an armoire cabinet in place of card catalog might work once i find a new home for the catalog piece (i cant bear to let it go).

    Cables can't be moved?

When I built my house, I was not satisfied with the cables in the family room and master bedroom. I had them moved.

That IS a card catalog cabinet! And I actually know how to use one. Very cool, I would keep it too. The library was my second home as a child - I took home an armful of books every week.

I never like TV in the traffic path from the door, but you have no walls in this room. How about you move one of the coat hooks to the left a tad and add a pair of hooks on the perpendicular right side wall for the back packs? Then measure carefully and find some boxy item that has a lid to open and drop the shoes inside? You could move it out and put a boot tray there if you live where it gets snowy or wet part of the year. Then switch back when the weather changes.

First question - is this the only place in the home that your kids can drop their backpacks and coats? Could those items go to their rooms? Is this the best place for backpacks? Shouldn't the backpacks be next to where they do their homework?

I think the only thing I would have is a shoe drop so that they are not walking through the house with wet shoes.

As for the card catalog, it is an interesting piece and I understand your emotional attachment to it, but is this the best piece of furniture for your space? Could you put it in the basement or garage and use it for tool storage? What do you store in it now?

I have had a hard time parting with some items that were my mothers, but really didn't fit with my home and my décor. I decided that rather than keeping these items I should let them go and let them bring joy to another household. Let it go - let it bring joy to another home.

@jennifer: I always like your excellent suggestions, but a card catalogue has wonderful uses. OP may have librarian background, or it's from her hometown library, so a great reminder of the golden days of libraries. I know an archivist who has one of these at home and has sorted old family letters, diaries, photos by years going back a couple generations. A card catalogue is like a living scrapbook--utilitarian and sentimental so a little harder to part with than a desk or dining table. I'm always sounding the Houzz horn on rehoming and decluttering furnishings and clutter, before any decorating but that piece fits well there. A small, attractive drop zone with baskets or shelves below would do the job.
