Edge Pulls--Proud Install or Top-Route Install with edge pulls / tabs?

last modified: 4 years ago

Hello,

We are building a new house and have decided to use edge pulls throughout the house. We are trying to decide between the "proud install" (screwing pulls into back of doors/drawers) or the "top-route install" notching out the drawers so the hardware is nested flush with the top of the doors/drawers.

We think we prefer the seamless look of the notched installation, but we are nervous about the permanence of notching our new cabinets. We appreciate your feedback!

For reference we are using Bereson Bravo pulls, mostly 6".

The image below with black hardward is of the "proud intall" without notching the cabinets.

This image is harder to see, but shows the silver hardware resting in drawer notches:

IMO the pull that allows the least amount of hand touching the cabinet would be my choice so the black one and I would never touch the integrity of the door to install a pull you might learn to hate then what you are committed forever to that pull.

No need to notch. And if you have the fasteners on the back, you can change them out later.

However, I would not advise the same pulls throughout the home. Could be a bit boring.

My wife wants edge pulls on everything. I went an bought 1 edge pull today to check it for fit on all the different doors and drawers. I see this exact same issue with not having enough space between the drawers! I'm going to go with edge pulls on the upper doors (no issue there), and typical pulls on the lowers. I also found that the smaller edge pulls don't have much surface to grab, so its difficult to pull out drawers with Blum closers.

Has anyone used these types of edge pulls on a panel ready dishwasher panel as the appliance pull? We're using edge pulls in the kitchen and would like the dishwasher to blend in as well with the same type of pull.

Our edge pulls had a coordinating appliace pull.

Kate would you mind sharing the pulls you used? or pictures of your setup?

Even though this post is a year old, I'd like to contributed what I found out while researching edge pulls and what to do about the panel-ready dishwasher.

One supply store assistant was adamant that a heavy duty appliance pull be used on the DW. But another store insisted as strongly that it was not necessary for a DW, but was certainly necessary for the fridge. Basically, it was overkill for a DW.

In a couple of weeks I will have the edge pull installed on a paneled Bosch DW. Right now, the unpaneled door seems quite heavy and I am skeptical that it will be sufficient to use only the 4" edge pull. But since the pulls are being installed throughout the kitchen, on un-notched cabinetry, I thought I would take a chance.

I have an edge pull on my dishwasher but I have never used it. The dishwasher auto opens at the end of the cycle and I leave my dishwasher cracked open when not in use.

@Andee - do you have any updates? how has your experience been since you posted this? i am going through the same right now, planning to use matte black edge pulls on drawers and cabinets, but worried about dishwasher (Bosch 800 panel ready)

I installed the same pull as throughout my kitchen. I like the look of continuity. However, the pull is thin and narrow and the door is heavy. So when I open it, I do it with intention and have to use my curled fingers to pull the door open. I am the only one who uses the appliance. DH has complained, but he has some hand pain anyway, so this would be a constant annoyance if he accessed it daily. I find it annoying but I would rather have the annoyance than a handle sticking out. One thought would be to have installed a longer pull on the appliance to spread the force to open it, and perhaps use two hands if necessary. The longer pull would be unobtrusive. Come to think of it, I could still do that!

Great idea, i think i will try that for our install. i have two pull lengths throughout the kitchen and will use the longer one for the dishwasher. we can always change it up later if it doesn't work out!

I did want to mention that installing those pulls vertically on upper cabinet doors did not work. The doors have to be notched in order for them to close in the middle and not have the cabinet contents visible through the crack. (Installing the Top Knob pulls horizontally at the bottom edge reminded me of a bird feeder tray, since the were "upside down" and stuck out so much at the bottom.) I had the installer take off all the pulls (leaving behind holes that I will have to fill) and put a nice slim solid horizontal handles that mimic edge pulls.

Can't tell if edges are rounded or sharp. Especially for horizontal mount, I would be concerned about someone brushing against it while walking/running by. Unclothed area might get a nasty scratch.

I can see a problem gripping and pulling with wet/slippery fingertips.

I have edge pulls throughout my kitchen. No notching. The pulls were chosen before demolition and construction began, and that may have helped with spacing overall. In any case, I've had them for a few years and am very happy with the way they work. They don't extend far enough for scratching or pulling on clothes to be an issue, and I am a huge klutz, so that is saying something.

The pulls are on the bottom edge of my upper cabinet doors, and the top edge of the bottom cabinet doors and the drawers. I briefly considered vertical placement, but quickly realized I'd come up against the problem Andee mentioned. So I decided on all horizontal placement before I signed off on the design and the purchase order.

Thank you all, I just got some shorter lengths as well and am planning to use them horizontally on the top edge of the cabinet door corners. I also got matching white ones to go on the lower corner horizontal edge of our upper cabinets (two tone kitchen). I realized on my own that the horizontal placement wouldn’t work as well. At the very least these are screwed in from the back side of the cabinet and if we decide to change our mind later we can always replace them without having to worry about holes on the front!
