What Susan said. Paint the cabinets AND trim a creamy white, not a blue-white. New cabinet hardware in a minimal, no-fuss style. Remove the scallop trim board.

No worries..there a lots of options…maybe just a strip of little led lights. Do you use the cabinets above the sink?

I’m not a lighting expert but I’ve seen strip lighting under kitchen cabinets and they provided good light. Or you could do a nice flush mount fixture

The curtains are a bit dark. Your kitchen isnt all that bright. You need all the light and bright you can get. The paper towel holder needs to be removed from under the window. Find a place that you can mount it on the underside of your upper cabinets. You need to pick a color scheme, before you replace curtains, and add a rug. Your cabinets first. If you are planning on painting them yourself, then, you need to clean them well first, and when you think they are nice and clean, clean them again. Its very important, so not a bit of kitchen grease is left on them, anywhere. Then, sand them well. Do not mix up your doors. Make sure you put them back on, in the exact places, you removed them from. Remove handles and hinges, and clean them well.. Once the cabinets are all sanded, and wiped down, so all dust is removed, its time to prime them, with a good quality sealing, bonding type primer. When the primer is dry, its time to paint. look at wait times on the primer can, before painting. Use a paint that is made for cabinets, not regular interior paint. Make sure you read the can well, for the wait time between coats. It will take two coats, and quite possibly 3. Its a long and tedious job to paint cabinets, so make sure you have the time to spend on them. Its worth it in the long run. though. Once the cabinets are all painted and put back together, leave the doors open a crack, for at least a week. It takes a longer time for the full cure time on the paint. The can, will tell you all that. Then, pick out a paint color for the walls, and then pick out some curtains, that dont cover half of your light from your window, and a new bright colored rug. You might also want to change out your existing light bulbs, to led daylight type 3500. It will brighten your kitchen a lot. As for the valance on the top of your cabinets, it goes with your cabinets, and the era they were built. You will never make them modern, so I would leave the valance unless you really hate it yourself. Nothing wrong with older cabinets. Not every cabinet needs to be brand new shaker style painted white. Take your time, and make it into a fun project. It will all be worth it at the end, and you will have a kitchen, to be very proud of.

We also have to paint the maroon walls. Should we paint them the same color as the cabinets? An off cream color?

Didn’t notice the maroon walls! Another light color that coordinates would work. Look at the off white wall/warm white trim paint color pairings that paint manufacturers/designers recommend… search online or visit your local paint/home improvement store.

It’s your home…you can do whatever you like! 😄 If you really like maroon, you could paint your cabinets/trim that same color!! My initial response was based on your love of the flooring and that you were thinking tan for the cabinets…so I was going down a lighter, brighter path…of tan and the golden color of the flooring. You should do you and what makes you happy! 😊

Ok so the cupboards have been painted. Still have to paint that maroon wall. We also bought a new light for over the sink which isn’t in yet. And will be replacing the curtain. Does it even need a curtain? Then I’m gonna order a rug runner. I also bought all new decorations for the shelves….lemon themed. I’ll show the finished product when don’t buy any other advice would be appreciated.

I also want a new light fixture to replace this one above my kitchen tv. Any ideas?
