I agree the space needs some texture and warmth, I would be tempted to find some old very large french breadboards and get them in there somewhere - some patina would definitely elevate the space (real not faux from HomeGoods)

Its a beautiful kitchen however yes i would replace your very modern tile insert with somthing that fits the style if your kitchen better. I also like your granite better than quartz

FWIW, I would redo all of it, use a larger subway and stop the subway at the bottom of the range hood.

Ideally, I would replace the hood with a wider one.

I dont mind the backsplash, but you definitely need some color in that kitchen. It is very nicely done, just way to sterile, and not inviting. A bit of color, will change all that.

Overall it's fine. I agree with Beth to add some color to the kitchen with accessories, plants, wood cutting boards, etc. The only thing I really dislike about this kitchen is the mosaic above the oven. One easy fix would be to cover it up with a stainless backsplash:

I think your kitchen perfect. I'm not usually a fan of an accent behind the range, but I think yours works wonderfully. Going with all white there is just going to make it blah. I really can't imagine not being completely pleased with that kitchen. Are you sure you actually don't like it or is it just that the counter and splash are timeless rather than trend of the moment?

I taped a white board on the mosaic square to see how I would like it if it was all white and I think it looks better!

Love your kitchen except for the tile behind the tile behind the range. YES to removing it. IMO your herringbone pattern idea is a great one!

I’m curious about how difficult that change will be… removing the accent field tile without affecting the frame, then installing new tile so it doesn’t look like it was re-done? Just an inquiring mind with very little tiling experience asking. I learn so much from this site.

I have this skinny wooden tray from H&M that is perfect for this kind of thing. narrow enough to be out of the way, and it's so pretty!

Jj J, I looked into it once. You can use a dremel to precisely cut out the grout around the perimeter, and then freely chip out the tile. But chipping off all the thinset underneath would probably be very tedious and you'd have to get a lot of it out so the new tiles don't stick out.

(I haven't actually done it yet because this task looks so annoying.)

Accessorizing is quite difficult for me but I’m trying! Lol This is taking a different route than I planned but has an earthy vibe that I think I like. The tickets are coming to redo the square tomorrow with the same tile in herringbone.

The tilers are here now. They have to replace the drywall and said that they would be able to continue the brick patter or do an accent square with herringbone. Idk which route to take lol. One side of me doesn’t want an accent square anymore, but the other side feels like it’ll add some type of style to an all white space

Well, if you're going all white, I'd just continue the brick pattern and put in a SS narrow shelf for a cool pepper grinder and ceramic salt cellar, etc. Might be too late if the tilers are already there.

I know some argue against it for practical reasons, but I love the look of a wooden cutting board or a tray propped behind a range.

I agree with daisychain -- just continue the brick pattern if you want it all white. I would only pick different tiles if using a different color. Putting a color there though will kind of limit your accessorizing options. With an all-white, you have a blank slate and you can change accent colors at different times of the year. And don't use any of the trendy patterned tiles -- otherwise, you are bound to repeat this process in a few years.

what about the grout?

the issue is going to be matching it up to the old brick layout. the grout will probably be a little off (simple things such as temperature can alter the grout color from one batch to the next) and if you have to buy new tile, chances are it might be a shade off.

I'd do a diff accent. do a smaller herringbone if you like.

I’d consider changing out the pendants for something with black matte metal and do a bigger runner. I have this one from Ruggable and love it

Thx again for all the suggestions!😊 The old mosaic is finally gone and I really like the all white! We decided to do an accent instead of continuing the brick pattern bc it would have been difficult to do without potentially demoing that whole area. I’m still working on accessories and a runner rug.

Oh I also agree with Beth’s comment about the placement of the square. The lip on our current range makes it look unsymmetrical. We ordered appliances a while back and still waiting on our new range that doesn’t have a lip. With the new one you’ll be able to see the three rows of tile at the bottom and that’ll make it look better too.

I'm sorry I don't have a picture. One of our friends painted the backsplash area behind the stove in a warm color that complemented their white cabinets and countertops. Then they had a rectangular piece of (I think 1/4" thick) tempered glass professionally installed over the painted section. Looks great! The key is finding a glass shop that can order and install the tempered glass, and seal the glass borders so moisture doesn't get to the paint.

Four year update: I ended up changing the decorative square of my backsplash a few years ago and it helped alot. But I often wonder should I re-do my countertops and backsplash altogether. I’m disappointed that I bought granite in 2020 when I knew for sure that I wanted quartz. At the time the granite was much less expensive and my husband preferred granite bc he thought it might be more durable. But quartz is definitely more modern and less busy. Now I’m grappling with should I replace the countertops again when I just replaced them 6 years ago.

Maybe I'm not seeing what you are, But your granite is lovely. Mind sharing what it is?

I don't know about in '22 but today I would want my back splash to be of the same material as your counter tops. Soo clean and seamless and rids the space of visual clutter.

you could consider a wood top for the island. I think I would leave the perimeter as it exists . maybe sometime in the future consider removing the desk area on the wall and inserting a coffee bar or pantry storage at shallow depth......thats not your question for right now but it could be a later -on activity.
