I can't believe someone spent the time/effort/money to have those painted purple! Since it's not your home you're probably stuck with it. I wouldn't put my own money into having someone else's cabinets painted even if it was allowed by the landlord. You might just have to embrace it. Add pops of green, yellow, orange maybe to make it look more intentional.

Accent color with yellow! Go Vikings!!!! LOL. jk You could have fun with it and decorate with Barney the dino! jk again. On a positive note, purple is the LEAST appetizing color on earth...which is why you rarely see purple on food packaging or fast food decor...unless it's grape jelly, of course! So it might help you drop a few pounds.

You could ask the landlord if it's ok to paint....maybe that's what they're hoping for. Get a renter to do it for free.

i dont mind it. what is says to me is they used one or two coats of stark white primer and had a dark brown paint chosen and it translated more this way. pick some vibrant bar stools if you plan to use the overhang . place some wood or orange colored things out. there is space for a table maybe focus on that as well. mats/rug? stools of a bold color. you could do much worse for a rental.

Purple kitchens are having a moment it seems. Lots of images of purple kitchens with a google search.

I might not be the best to answer, as I like the purple ... I think the element that doesn't go is the backsplash. I don't find the purple to be that loud.

Anyways, I think if you select your elements carefully, you can get the cabinets to read more of an espresso/java. I have a wood armoire that I was painting a second piece to correspond ... I put up a pile of paint chips and ended painting the second piece a deep purple ... I do tend to select purples anyways, but it wasn't intentional that time - I was shocked when I opened the paint can and discovered I'd bought purple. (I do believe the person who painted these cabinets did know they were selecting purple ... and yes, it's something I might have done.) The point I'm trying to make is that while the purple chips blended into my armoire, the piece is definitely wood with a java stain ... espresso minwax stain on birch matches it equally well (I made a shelf for inside). If you don't like the purple think of it like a java and treat it that way. The red brick is not helping, so I'd start with a window treatment ... I've got the room with my armoire dressed with warm white (not cream) linens and a warm charcoal grey (BM Temptation), though I do also have purple walls in there ... lol.

I have seen worse. Nice countertops, layout, light and bright — mostly. I would just try to embrace it.

It’s a rental. Money is better spent saving for your own kitchen down the road.

I suspect the intent was some shade of what they thought was going to be Navy Blue. It's definitely different but, IMO not unpleasing. Paint the walls adjacent to, and above, the cabs white. Be lighthearted about it, the dinner party conversations will be more lively because of it.

The wall color is really the worst part of the whole kitchen. I'm not sure why they thought that went with anything?

If the landlord lets you, you may want to only paint the island . It seems like the light hitting it makes the purple stand out more than the cabs . Just doing the island in something soothing won’t set you back much in time or money. Have fun

I wouldn't paint the cabinets. What happens if it doesn't come out good or if the paint starts peeling in a few years - you will then become responsible for that.

I would try to get used to it . I think it is actually nice to have something different. As others have said, the wall color is really a shame. See if you can change that.

Then just find some nice accessories and stools. After a while , you probably wont notice it as much.

I wouldn’t choose purple cabinet, but I like yours more than I like the wall color, tbh. Perhaps that can be changed more easily…

Stools to lessen the impact of the purple island. I would be more interested in covering up the backsplash tile. Maybe something like tin, although I don't know how it is installed, and whether it could be removed without damage to existing tile. There's always the path of trays, cutting boards, or artwork leaned up against the backsplash to cover much of the tile. Good luck!

Everyone has their personal tastes and preferences, as you see. But you are the one who is going to be residing there, so more info about your taste and style would probably be helpful. And we know what you don’t like (i.e. the cabinets) - but we really have no idea what you ‘do‘ like in this space, if anything. For example, you might really like the current backsplash. And/or the current wall paint color might not be any problem for you, etc.

One thing for sure is that this is a rental, and so less is probably more. @The Kitchen Place brings up a good point, though, that the landlord might be thrilled if you painted the cabinets. On the other hand, if it is not done right, the landlord would no doubt not be so thrilled. And painting cabinets the right way is a tedious diy and requires proper materials and some level of skill; and alternatively, to have it professionally done correctly can be costly.

I got excited when @The Kitchen Place said to accent in yellow - because I like that idea. But then I realized that she was just saying that in jest. 😂

But personally, I really do like the idea of embracing a purple/plum and yellow/gold theme myself - but I am no doubt in a minority (of one) on that. ;) The warmth and opulence of gold with the rich, regal purple - I could get into. And I think the existing window treatment works with that scheme, as well.

I used a tile visualizer and it tiled further up the wall than the backsplash area, as you can see.

You could alternatively do white on backsplash and leave the wall color as is - or paint the walls white, too.

I would use contact paper or a removable wallpaper over the current backsplash.

These people used contact paper on their tiled countertops to good effect. Your countertops are fine - but the idea is you can put these materials over tile.

And lighting... if that is fluorescent lighting in the ceiling, I would ask the landlord to remedy that. Get some better lighting that is dimmable for the ceiling. And I might also bring in some temporary plug-in under cabinet lighting.

So to recap: contact paper or removable wallpaper on the backsplash - and maybe some plug-in undercabinet lighting - and that would basically be it for me, in terms of investing in this space. And I’d be comfortable. It’s a rental. The cabinet color would not be my choice; but you can really have a lot of fun with that purple. I would. :)

I doubt you would be “allowed” to paint the cabinetry, but if you were allowed to, how much would it cost for a professional paint job? Is that in your budget? It probably would take at least two coats of paint.

I like the purple but not the backsplash, that was a poor choice on the landlord's part. Research complementary colors for purple and make it work.

Add some art work that is more purple than the cabinets, and that will tone down the cabinet colour in comparison. like these

I love that the owners went for it (or at least didn’t fix it if they intended something different) and here they are renting it out with no problem (presumably). Just an offset to all the people that are so worried about resale and potential future buyers - just do what you love.

Perhaps paint the island to match the top…(white?)…and the walls the same as the ceiling…smallish project…but adding more continuity

Take some cues from this Rita Koenig kitchen featured in House Beautiful. It seems like you have a table area on the other side of the room. Start to think about how you make the kitchen area and the table area one space.

You'll have a lot of possibilities to add in texture - swap out that light fixture above where a table should go. Replace the blind above the sink with one that is larger and has a lot more wow factor. Either a fabric print or a beefier woven blind.

Once nice green plant on your counter that reads will from afar will help distract your eye from all of the purple.

Your counter stools will really be key. I'm not sure what exactly they should be but they need to be interesting enough to make your eye focus on them. Put stools both sides of the counter so you can cover up the end of the island too.

Yellow and green accents might be your friend here. Or might look terrible! You need to experiment.

(The woman who lived across the street was I'm sure trying to paint her shutters a handsome royal blue that turned out purple. It really ruined my view out the window. I empathize.)

If you plan to stay for awhile, I would look for some inexpensive art and other decor that plays nicely with the peach walls and has hints of the dark purple in it. I searched those colors and this caught my eye, but there were tons of options.

You asked about incorporating and I think it could be fun to just embrace.

A runner will distract from the backsplash, but more importantly make cabinet color less random.

Add a large antique dough bowl on island to draw the eye and create interest. I’d add grey stools, as I think there is grey in backsplash.

Add a large, fun poster on the big wall.

I think painting won’t be necessary and consider where it would end (given hallway), time and potentially your own money.

The layout makes it simple to only paint the area above cabinets in kitchen area ..small project ..and creates a separate feel to the space..
