Above the hutch decor

We just moved into a lake house and I'm stumped with what to put above this hutch. My style is contemporary/modern, neutral tones, light and airy. As you can see, this is a 2-story ceiling and I feel like the white space above the hutch is in need of something. I do not feel that every wall needs art - I actually like clean and simple, less is more - but I think this area feels a bit sterile. I've added a photo from the reverse direction from the dining table so you can see the rest of the living room decor - black accents and greenery.

I'd like to do something bold above the hutch - I thought about a living wall? Or perhaps a mass of white modern pottery? Would really appreciate your thoughts.

(side note: we are in the middle of a kithchen and bath remodel so - tape on the floor, chairs stacked in corner...)

I like the space above hutch with nothing above, it's an elegant space. Perhaps move that tall plant from behind sofa and put it on the left of the hutch since there's a window there. Enjoy your new home, very pretty!

I would not put anything on the wall above the hutch. I know you prefer neutral tones, but the addition of some color besides the green plants would add visual interest. You could start by replacing the mirror over the fireplace with a piece of colorful art.

Are you planning to remove the chandelier? Anything you put over the hutch will have that chain in front of it. Consider changing the chandelier and hanging it a bit higher: it could negate the need for anything over the hutch and provide better light in the dining room.
If you MUST have something above the hutch, how about an off-center floral/greenery arrangement? Art is best seen at about eye level, so art on that wall would not necessarily work because of the paneling. I would want some color in the space: window treatments, some colorful items in the hutch, a table cloth or centerpiece on the table, a rug in a color,
a tall potted plant, something not white or beige.

You really need a larger scaled, tiered chandelier IMO.

There are too many visual lines on the bottom part of the tall wall (painted wood paneling plus the hutch) which is not comfortable to my eyes. I would eliminate the top part of the hutch and keep the bottom for storage. You may need to have to top of the buffet refinished. Then add a colourful large art installation from above the panelling and close to the ceiling. The art does not have to be a large painted canvas, it can be a metal sculpture, wood blocks or something whimsical - look online. Adding colour as an accent will add visual interest and will not take away from a monochromatic decor.

The art looks silly and out of scale imo. I would rather see a taller hutch and a more substantial chandelier as Nancy shared.
