Gritty mix - Is Danish moller clay the same as diatomaceous earth?

I purchased two bags of this product thinking it was diatomaceous earth:

Which is described as Danish moller clay (or calcined moller clay).

Have I made a huge error?

They are not the same....but close. Moler clay is combination of both a smectite clay and diatoms formed some 54 million years ago. Diatomaceous earth is just the powdered fossilized remains of diatoms....no clay involved.

IMO, the molar clay would be a much more appropriate ingredient for a gritty mix than just the DE.

DE used to be used in pool filters ... if you cant find it in the garden center.. try the pool store ...

Ken, the DE used in pool filters has been treated, altered, and modified so that it's not the same as horticultural DE. At all! It's also a much more hazardous product regarding the safety of the applicator and because of its altered state, pool filter DE is not affective at controlling insects. 😞
