I fell in love with a Porcelanosa tile but was disappointed to learn that the tile I liked was actually ceramic and rated for walls only (mind you the obnoxious sales guy had no clue and said “Of course it’s porcelain, ceramic is the cheap $2 stuff at Home Depot! We don’t sell ceramic - we’re even called Porcelanosa!” 🙄🙄🙄), and the corresponding floor tile that was in fact porcelain looked very different from the wall tile.

My Sales told me ceramic for wall and porcelain for floor. They are priced the same. They have different color even from the same collection. Feel their price is so high for ceramic. Is it mostly for thr design and look of the tiles?

Any other good tiles companies in North Cali do you guys recommend in the $5-$6 price range?

We ended up going with a local tile shop and getting Ceasar, Emser and Stonepeak porcelain (I believe they charged $7/sf, online you could find the same tile for couple of bucks less, but then you have to deal with shipping vs having our contractor pick up at a local warehouse) and I’ve been very happy with the quality.

Yes, even if you donʻt time it to buy during the sales and have to buy full retail, Porcelanosa is exceptional quality tile. Porcelanosa is architectural, and not only do they care about colors, they introduce texture and feel --something that lesser tiles leave out.

You should decide ahead of time, what other pieces will complement it if you have other bits youʻre incorporating into the design. It always helps to know. Their colors and quality canʻt be beat, and you will never regret buying Porcelanosa. I will also say that buying their fixtures when theyʻre on promotion are also a very good deal. Shower, faucets, sinks --all are great deals when theyʻre set at a special price. They have tiles for walls, and for floors. Be sure to ask. They will also overnight ship a sample to you.

The thing with buying exactly what you want (and possibly spending more) is that youʻre saving yourself a re-do, hence, not only are you saving money youʻre also keeping all that scrap out of the landfills. Whatʻs so disconcerting is that much of the cheap materials being used by flippers is just ending up in landfill, as those kitchens are redone in less than 10 years. Whatever you decide -high or low end tile, or mixing high and low: Remodel once, and love it.

FYI, the difference in Porcelain vs. Ceramic is in the composition of the clay, as well as the temperature it is fired at. Porcelain is generally made of kaolin, feldspar and sand, has a fine texture and is fired at a very high temperature. Think of the china your grandmother had. Ceramic is usually white, brown or red clay, coarser in texture, and fired at a low temp. Think of the stoneware dishes your Mom might have had. Porcelain is more resistant to water, and is generally stronger., and are the choice in high quality remodels. Ceramic is more porous. Porcelain is harder, and also harder to cut, requires a super sharp blade, and a professional to do it. Ceramic is easier to cut, and install, and also cheaper. Talavera tile, Saltillo tiles (both are terra cotta) are examples of ceramic tile, and are appropriate choices for many settings that require a rustic look, including the colorful Mexican tiles.

Finally have my porcelenosa order in my garage, unbroken. First shipment came trom Spain and was smashed to bits in the last 19 miles. I was not able to find larger format tiles with matching wall (ceramic)/floor (porcelain) that I liked as much anywhere else. Or at all. For us the 40% off sale made it doable. Very worth it I think.

I know at some point someone posted that they imported from Europe at a lot less cost, has anyone found a retailer to do this recently?
