Cancer really does stink, feel free to skip

last modified: 4 years ago

My reason for sharing my story may be so people understand how sneaky and shocking cancer works. I had zero symptoms, have always been healthy and active. Not a clue what was going on inside of me. Of course, I’ve known people who have had cancer, thankfully most have fully recovered. I hope to join them in total recovery, but am sad that so many others have gone through the pain and angst that the last month has brought me and those that love me.

My husband and I have lived a very good life. Married 52 years with few hiccups.

Last November (2021) out of nowhere he got very sick - 3 weeks in the hospital , one week sedated on a vent. (Sepsis)

By the end of December he was home, with home health nurses, PT, OT and lots of support from family and friends.

During his last PT appointment (early February) I mentioned to the therapist that I thought I might have a pulled muscle in my right thigh. She knew my history of arthritis in the right knee and suggested I call my ORTHOPAEDIC surgeon if it got any worse. We really thought I had just been more active, while caring for DH.

After a few days I went to Urgent Care. Doc agreed it was probably a pulled muscle. Given meds and suggestion to rest as much as possible. On Feb 14, DH took me to the ORTHOPAEDIC ER because the pain had gotten worse. EXrays taken, bursitis diagnosed.

By Saturday (2/19) I could barely move. Our son got me to the ER where they were looking for an infection of the bursa….that day, an Interventional Radiologist was called in. No problem at all with the bursa.

Femur fractured in 2 places.

Fracture caused by a tumor that traveled from my lung to my hip area and basically exploded. After a full body bone scan, a spot was also found on my brain. Primary tumor is in the lung. (My Last cigarette was in the 1970s, people do wonder).

Luckily, I was accepted as a patient at a renouned Cancer Center close to our home. I was transferred to H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center on March 1. Total hip replacement done on March 3. Up and walking on March 5. Discharged to home on March 10. Have been home with PT, OT and nurses who come as scheduled.

Numerous appts at Moffitt meeting teams of experts that I have great faith in.

Hip surgeon wants the hip to heal before radiation. Will know more after my 3/31 appt, but radiation of the hip area is expected.

First radiation to the brain is on the 3/23….surgery may follow next week.

Waiting for more info about the lung spot before treatment plan is decided.

There really is very little pain with the hip replacement. (the needle biopsy of the lung hurt more.) I had heavy duty drugs while hospitalized before and after surgery. I am now at the point that I save a good pill till I need it in the middle of the night. Opiad constipation is another whole discussion, I’ll spare the details.

To say I am overwhelmed at times is putting things mildly. We are blessed with wonderful family and friends that seem to know exactly what is helpful and what is not.

Our 2 adult children have stepped up and taken care that DH and I at our numerous medical appointments with a list of questions and the calm mental state to listen to what our providers say.

I never ask ‘why me?’ but I somehow wish I had more of a clue that something was going wrong inside me.

I will never turn down a good thought, vibe or prayer. Tell people you love that you really do love them. Often.

This forum still makes me smile most times. I thought of you all when I had my 20 year old granddaughter go buy a recliner for me. Only one store within 25 miles had one for quick delivery, I’m sure it will be fine (arrives Tuesday). I know it’s big and brown and ‘it massages you grandma!’

Peace.

Maddie, I hope all is well. I think you have another medical appointment today?

As for Wordle, it took me SIX tries to get the answer! That was a first.

It was challenging! My DH was cussing at it. 😄

Mtn, I too went 6X that day. Rhyming words are the worst. And just the day before, on Sunday, the Gospel reading was the parable of the Prodigal Son. I should have gotten it in 1. But no...

You all are great! Thank you! No appointments outside the house today. The evil/sweet PT did come to make me walk more then my sore head wanted to. She was correct, it did me good.

I also was able to chew food for the first time since brain surgery. Cottage cheese with tiny pieces of pineapple but that counts as food, right?

Sorta decorating related, did you know an extra long twin fitted sheet fits well on a big brown recliner without getting stuck in the mechanism? And you can slip a pillow under the sheet on the foot part for extra comfort.

Wordle 285 5/6 - still not the top of my game. 💕

It definitely counts for food! I’m excited for you, another step forward. :)

@maddielee I have a friend (one of my lunchbunch ladies - schoolmates of my mom ) who recently had a lesion (most of it) removed from her skull. She said her head was incredibly sore for weeks. They ended up taking a piece of bone and replacing it with titanium. I was with her last week and she showed me the incision - still a tad swollen (after almost a month) and she is so frustrated with getting the last bits of glue off her scalp!! I'm so glad you are eating and doing PT. Keep up the good work - we are rooting for you!

Maddie, you are doing great! I'm not even playing Wordle, so you beat ALL my scores. LOL And my husband says cottage cheese and pineapple is definitely food -- food he likes. I knew he liked cottage cheese, but usually not with cottage cheese. I'm going to remember that.

So glad you are on the mend Maddielee. Yawning never occurred to me, but I can imagine it is uncomfy given your jaw soreness.

After I blithely asserted here that I had never failed at Wordle and almost never got a 5, I am starting to suck. I keep getting words that have like 10 variations and choosing which one is just a big cr@pshoot. That's my excuse anyway. Next subject?

Years back when I was in a Bermuda hospital after a car accident, my then BF and now DH washed my hair for me! Sealed the deal. Nothing like showers, baths, etc when you are under the weather.

Once again, thank you for the encouraging words.

Had a nice day yesterday, but it wore me out. My friends came and stocked our fridge/freezer .with goodies. They knew not to stay too long and were carefull and aware that laughing would not be comfortable, so stories were not over the top.

Another morning with a headache not as bad as it was yesterday..

yes, I wore a bra. I’ve never been someone who could spend the day in pjs or a nightgown. Most days I force myself to get dressed. For me its part of the healing process, having clothes on is a small step towards normal. (plus I don’t want my grandkids to remember me as an old sick lady wrapped in a blanket.)

    Love to all.

So happy to hear you have the hip and the brain surgery behind you. I'm sure there are down times, but you're amazing to stay so positive and do all that you can. A dear friend had a massive tumor removed from her brain's right frontal lobe on Tues. I pray that she recovers as well as you seem to be doing and that both of you experience FULL recovery.

    maddielee thanked Re Tired

Once again, writing ’Thank you’ seems inadequate. But I do appreciate every one of you.

One month since Hip surgery, one week since the tumor on my brain was removed. I’m feeling OK today. Not great, OK. Radiation on the hip starts Wednesday. treatment for lung comes after I heal more, the doctors don’t want me throwing up while my brain is compromised.

This thread has grown in the best possible way, time to let it go where long threads retire.

love and peace to all. 💕

With what you are going through and have gone through it is no wonder you're going to have ebbing and flowing of feeling good or okay even. This kind of thing takes time and patience to heal from. I wish we could do more. Sending good healing Loving thoughts your way!💖

There should be no reason for vomiting with treatment. Make sure that you have all the anti-emetics necessary to prevent that. Hugs!

You do have a lot going on and had major surgeries. It's ok to have ups and downs. I'm so impressed with what you're able to accomplish so far in your healing in such short time. Just focus on the small things - which it seems like you're doing. Sounds like you have some awesome friends who understand not being up for things. Hope you continue to improve so you don't have to delay treatment, but even if you do it is ok as you want your body to have the best possibly chances to handle any additional trauma. How is your husband doing - if I remember he also had some health issues going on.
