Looks like newly emerging butterbur, maybe Petasites frigidus. And that's a spreader to be sure!!

I thought it looked like Ranunculus.

Ranunculus asiaticus will not overwinter in a zone 7. And flower buds are carried on longer stems, not creating such a large, single bulbous mass in the center of the plant.

The flower bud doesn't match Petasites, and Ranunculus asiaticus, (?) isn't listed on bonap, but there are 18 other species of Ranunculus that occur in New Jersey.

The foliage and flower bud look like Ranunculus. I did not state which species because I cannot tell! Some of the bulbs sold as Ranunculus are supposedly zone 4 hardy. But they don't list a species or scientific name.

None of which bear any resemblance to the photo.

Why is there always this assumption that these ID requests are going to be a native plant? Chances are very good that if appearing in a cultivated garden it is not.

You obviously assume that I'm biased because of my love for native plants, and what? I'm trying to steer every ID so it ends up being a native plant??🤔🤣 That's an insult to my integrity because I always search out the truth, no matter what the answer is, whether endangered or invasive, native or exotic.

It does not look like Petasites. The foliage is not at all a match either. To me the leaves appear compound. Let's see if the OP recalls planting something.
