The planters are made of wood, just square boxes, open to the soil beneath, the climate is warm most of the year and I do not have to move them at all, it would be a permanent location.

Why not put them in the ground? Mango trees get huge.

I have heavy clay soil, that is why I am thinking about using some kind of raised beds.

Now I am thinking of adding more organic matter to the soil to help with the compaction issue, then I am gonna give it a try.
