I mean mixing metals keeping doorknobs the same, then adding different for lighting/curtain rods

Please add some pics o fthe spaces further back and I agree what you have for lighting is uselss. I need to know your style and what is in the spaces you show.

Nothing is complete in any rooms yet we’ve only just painted. Pulling out carpet next month and refinishing floors. I like a modern coastal/traditional look, this stairwell needs a bit more lighting. There is no light in the hallway only a ceiling fan which we plan to keep for a while.

Another view of light I want to replace. Bottom of stairs so I think this flush mount and hallway sconce should match, but will it need to be brushed nickel if my front door will be that?

I don't know how much you plan on changing, but modern coastal would mean a makeover of that staircase. (see my next comment for suggestions)

as for the front area, paint, door paint, and maybe a light like these

I actaully have this bergamot light in my own home. LED bulbs, tons of light.

if you need a staircase sconce, this would work. comes in diff colors

but I think you should also hang a ceiling light

BTW, here's a similar low entry way in a craftsman style.

@wdccruise - basically…. Think Nancy Meyers movies. It’s coastal without beach decor all over (“modern” coastal) but also traditional/classic type furniture. It looks relaxing and clean.

@beth H - thank you for all these great ideas and inspo pics. We are redoing the stairs and all flooring (except tile) in 2 weeks. I was thinking a sisal runner, refinishing tops of stairs and then white risers. Was unsure about the end railing/posts but you’ve given some nice ideas to consider. TY for the light samples- I will look up the one you said gives a lot of light bc we need that. Will also consider wall treatment going up the stairs and the hallway bc it leads to high ceilings and needs something. Thanks!

I strongly advise against a real sisal runner on your stairs. The sisal can be VERY slippery. VERY SLIPPERY. (Trust me. I know from experience!). Look for synthetic fiber sisal/sea grass looks if you go that route. Durable. Can be bound in tape or self bound.

I have a similar staircase to yours and chose simple schoolhouse ceiling lights.
