Hosta Variability

I was just looking at a couple of hosta on the Hosta Library. One was Mama Mia. A couple of the photos were of wonderful plants with wide margins and and a distinctive pattern. Then, there were a couple that were so common looking that you wouldn't buy one. Most all in both categories were grown by known hostaphiles. So, it probably wasn't the grower. So what happened? Is it just the luck of the draw?

The other was Gypsy Rose. Same scenario as above. Some had white outlines on the center stripe, some didn't. Some had good contrast, others didn't.

I've lost most of my hosta, but it seems like mine were fairly true to type. Of course, I didn't expect Francee to look like Patriot. But I also didn't expect to buy Patriot and have it look like Francee, either.

Is that much variety of outcomes just the "nature of the beast"?
