Indeed bkay, it's the nature of the beast. Variegated hostas do not have uniform variegation across one plant and there's quite a bit of variability between individual plants, particularly of they're from different TC batches. Take a look at anyone of your own variegated hostas and observe there's no absolute consistency in the pattern between individual leaves.

Take a look at this 'Regal Splendor' for example. the 2 most visible leaves have a reasonable margin on them with one being wider than the other and if you look closer, the leaf on the bottom left almost in the corner has a quite narrow margin and the leaf behind that one at virtually the 6 o'clock position is not showing any margin at all. All this in one plant.

Maturity also plays a big role. a young liberty has a narrower margin than an old one. many factors come into play. it really gets crazy with streakers. the cells in the meristem can rearrange in suprising ways from year to year. one has to expect variability especially with the faster growers.

Thanks, guys. Come to think about it, the variability on So Sweet (My favorite hosta) leaves is considerable. Also, second and third flushes always have wider margins and more colors than the first flush.

I have also noticed the variability when looking in the HL. Hosta look so different from yard to yard…. I have seen this during the ABCs as well. That’s what makes them so difficult to ID when you have one with a lost tag or that was given to you by someone who doesn’t know the name.
It’s always a challenge!!
