Walk-in closet/master bath combo room? (small space)

Hey everyone - I'm working to reconfigure the layout of an existing small master closet/bathroom area in the home I just purchased. This house is a bit of a downsize (1670 sqft) from my previous house (3300 sqft), so I'm trying to make every ft count.

The current layout has two shallow perpendicular closets coming off the master bedroom, plus a small connected bathroom with a toilet/single sink/shower. Floorplan (red area) and photos:

My dilemma: satisfy the below goals in the current 12'9" x 9' combined closet/bath footprint.

Requirements:

Dual sinks w/ cabinets

Shower (36" x 48" should be fine)

Closet with significant amount of built in drawers on lower half, space on top half for hanging shirts/pants, and a small section for hanging taller items like dresses.

No door collision like the current shower door & bathroom door have (as seen in last photo above)

Nice to have:

Toilet to have its own privacy door (a 3'x4' enclosed room with a pocket door would be fine)

Some cubby space in closet for things like towels, medicine box, shoes, etc

Moonshot/hail mary goal:

Big tub (there's a second bathroom in the house where this can be satisfied, but never hurts to ask..)

The closet and shower/bathroom area don't necessarily require physical separation, unless y'all tell me they should.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a budget that can allow for relocating plumbing? Is your home slab on grade or is there a basement or crawl space where plumbing is accessible?

Happy to relocate plumbing as needed. The house has a crawl space, which I assume runs the entire length of the home (I'm moving from an area where all the houses are slab, so the crawl space concept is new to me)

Put a wall of pax in the bedroom proper, where the glass console is across from the bed and use the 9x12.9 area as a two sink, separate shower and tub with a separate WC and linen closet large master bath. Or keep a single sink small bath without a tub and do a better built in closet area but 116sqft is too tight to have both.

Is there a view out the sliding door at end of bedroom that you want to maintain? What about the window in the current bath--do you want to keep? Just curious about how much flexibility you might have.

What are your feelings about built-ins/wardrobes in the bedroom as opposed to walk-in closet?

I think folks have asked some good questions about priorities for you to help guide a potential layout. Some common advice here is that double sinks waste a lot of storage and counter space. If you don't have 2 people getting ready at the same time in that bathroom, consider one sink.

Your current design is pretty efficient from a space perspective, so to add things to the bathroom, you'd need to reduce the closet space in that area. I agree a pax style wardrobe in the bedroom could both look nice and give you the drawer space you're looking for. Measure out/ plan out what you feel you actually need for linear closet space. Unless you're willing to essentially scrap the entire closet, a separate soaking tub won't fit in the space with your other wish list items.

Lastly I wanted to mention a toilet room is a minimum 30"x60" by IRC. I do recommend at least 36" wide or it would feel very cramped. You can use internal walls to give the toilet area more privacy without sacrificing so much space. Again it comes down to... what are your priorities and are 2 adults using this space to get ready at the exact same time.

I pulled together a quick example layout to get your wheels turning and spur more conversation.

Two possibilities to keep closet near bath room using a wall of pax units. Corners waste so much usable space. One sacrifices a second sink and larger shower for a built in tub the other sacrifices a tub but gains a sink and larger shower. Neither can has a separate WC.

Travis: if you have enough space between your bed and the wall (where you currently have the console table and painting), consider a “European style” closet: built-ins along that entire wall, in any configuration and height you can imagine….check out images on Houzz and/or IKEA. These are great for areas where walk-in closets don’t work, and I have seen great examples, incl. my parents’ bedroom (in Europe). Most European spaces are smaller, so they have great space-saving ideas. These built-ins also don’t need to be super deep, depending on the amt of feet you have there, because you can hang clothes horizontally (as you’re looking at your open closet), rather than vertically, as we’re usually seeing. Now you have all that space for your bathroom, which surely will accommodate all your wish-list. Happy reno-ing!
