I like the colourful one too. Add some pillows, accent pieces or art that pulls your favorite colour out of that rug.

I think that part of the problem is the size of the rug. To me, the sofa and chairs are huddled on it and there is no connection to the TV stand/sideboard. From the picture, the carpet goes all the way to the back of your sofa. Can you bring the rug closer to the TV? Or turn the rug so that the front legs of the sofa are on it and there’s more carpet to go under the chairs? I would also push the chairs out : there’s alot of furniture in that space with chairs, coffee table, footsteps, sofa.

What is the rule of thumb when picking accent pillows? I believe awhile back in another post, someone posted the guide. Thinking it might of been Beth H.

I like when I can get the vanilla, gray and black colors in the rug. Stay away from white. I'm not crazy about the art over the sofa.

The reason you probably don’t like the rug you posted is because the shaggy material diffuses the design. All the suggested ones, including the colorful abstract you chose, are flatter weaves and make the design more “crisp”. Either go with the abstract rug and colorful pillows, or follow @BeverlyFLADenzer’s monochromatic theme. In either choice, your rug is too small - see the sizes Beverly suggests.

My choice would be the colorful one, but if I walked into your home and it has the monochrome theme, I’d be impressed as well.

I agree new rug is busy but also think its style is better suited to MCM or even a 70’s vibe. Rather than hits and misses, I think you may want to decide how you want room to feel.

There are so many rug choices; can be a subtle backdrop, making accessoring easier - do you want modern and airy, then go neutral.

Something in between that feels interesting/fun/modern, yet calm.

If you go more colourful/prominent, be sure it picks up the colors in your art and works overall in the open concept/other furniture.

If you could pull the seating/tv down a bit (as there seens to be lots of open space), room may feel better balanced and add a larger rug to better ground that area by both chairs resting on rug.

In regards to cushions, there are no set rules exactly, base number/placement and color/patterns on taste and practicality. There is all kinds of help on Pinterest, search “how to arrange sofa pillows“. Also look for examples in inspiration pictures.

Any suggestions on artwork & pillows to match the abstract rug? Picking out pillows & artwork are so hard for me to vision. Last time I had to pick pillows, it took me 6 months! Workers @ Homegoods started recognizing me & calling me by my 1st name.😀… Since abstract rug is busy, not sure of artwork. Like Beverly’s suggestion of the 1st area rug.

Look at pillow covers on Etsy not HomeGoods because HG doesn't carry the larger sized 24 or Euro sized pillows.

When you select pillows select a Solid, a Small Pattern and a Large Pattern to coordinate together. I like a bit of black in your room like your chair because it adds DRAMA to the space.

I'm not feeling the abstract rug either, seems too harsh with your furniture. I like any of the ones Beverly suggested.

Beverly…where was the 1st rug you posted from? Hubby is going to kill me. Had him remove the trellis rug, then place the abstract 1. Wanted him to store the trellis rug, just in case I changed my mind. He tried putting it under the bed in spare bedroom, and knocked off the support leg on the bed frame. So now I think that I will ease him down the road on a new rug….In the mean time, what do you guys advise for pillows & artwork for the present abstract rug?

I love the first rug Beverly has chosen, and I like the artwork works well with that particular rug. I would add some of the colors from the it more into the space either by way of pillows or accessories.

Might as well keep the original rug if you want room to feel the same. I’m using Beverley’s rug as an example; maybe someone can provide your selection for a truer rendition. For $500 and the trouble, room won't change significantly, even with new cushions. Perhaps that’s what you want?

If you want a change, I’d go with a subtle, lighter rug, with art and cushions being what pulls room together. See below for an airy, coordinated look (ignore color scheme, just wanted to show the overall feel).
