If you have some place to store the planted containers over winter, they could work.

I agree with Pam - they would definitely work, but they would need winter protection. An unheated garage would be ideal .... or over-winter in a window well .... or against a north wall of a heated building and mulch heavily. For the long term, they would require regular repotting (every other year), which includes bare-rooting, root pruning, and a change of soil.
