I just lost a whole long response! Grr. It boiled down to:

- winter damage from lots of temperature fluctuations or colder than usual at some point in the season.

- It will bloom and grow new leaves soon and will look better. Do not prune, spray, etc. which is more likely to increase problems.

- If late summer and fall are really dry, water so it doesn’t go into winter parched or soggy, but sometimes damage happens regardless.
