Where are you in terms of general location such as nearest big city and USDA growing zone?

How long ago were they planted?

What is your soil like, and was the area mulched?

Did you deadhead?

Generally, icelandic poppies are quite short-lived perennials or biennials, depending of how happy they are with their location. They may reseed if the seeds land on bare soil, but the seeds need light to germinate. The little plants won’t bloom the first year in most settings.

As per the details outlined above by Babs, Icelandic poppies are almost always treated - and behave - as annuals, even in very mild climates like mine, They want cool summers, very well drained soil and consistent moisture. They will rarely survive summer heat and humidity to come back again the following season.

I am in southeastern MA and plant Icelandic poppies every single spring. I have tried deadheading and not deadheading…have always had to buy new ones.
