You can actually put them in the ground anytime. About now is when I'd plant mine.

You don't need to plant the whole potato (if that was your plan?). Esp planting in a pot just a little sliver with the attached sprout will do.

Why are you choosing to grow them totally inside? Seems like a huge hassle for just a few potatoes.

I would cut them into smaller pieces and let the cuts heal for a few days. Those big pieces will rot. You can plant them anytime there is any sort of eye. They don't have to be of a certain length.

Growing in a container outside is very easy, all you need is sun and a container that drains.

@robert567 I agree that outside is easy and better yet I am a student overseas and moved to an apartment + no sun haha like 20 hours sun (without clouds) for the whole summer (1.5-2month) unfortunately

If it is above freezing for over 3 months, with more than 12 hours of sun, you could grow potatoes. Potatoes do not need hot weather. But maybe you have nowhere to put them.

Potato stems are sprawling, so you will need some serious lights and a big container that will dry out, you don't want soggy soil. They will grow, but the potatoes will be small.

I have been growing my potatoes outside in buckets for many years. When the soil reaches a temp of around 50 degrees it is time to plant. We planted ours end of April, beginning of May. They are ready for their first dirt dump into the buckets to cover up the stems. If you were doing this in open beds it would be the first "Hilling". Never tried growing indoors but cut the eyes into one inch pieces or so. You don't need to plant the whole potato. Do not crowd the bucket with your seeds. You will have fewer and smaller potatoes. Cover with at least 3 inches of soil to start. We amend our soil with manure, sand and Coir (ground coconut husks). As the potato grows to about 6-8 inches tall you can cover the stem with soil to produce more potatoes. good luck with growing indoors. Let us know how it works out for you.
