It is a viburnum and I'd guess. V. lentago or nannyberry.

Crataegus. Leaf arrangement is not opposite and flowers with long filaments says it is hawthorne.

Good call Floral; we don’t see Sorbus much here in California, but that seems to fit.

The little I can find on google says that Sorbus aria is a Zone 5 species. Not likely in Z3a with temps very near to -40 this past winter and in a bare parking lot. Also note the tops are only about 10' which makes it a shrub not a tree.

Sorbus americana is a small tree hardy to this area that looks nothing like what I posted. I've been growing them from local seed.

I think Flo means that S. aria would have to be in her neighborhood, not mine.

Are there any Physocarpus without lobed leaves?

I'd agree with floral that it looks like a Sorbus. I've never seen S aria but I believe it's cold hardy down to zone 3 or 4, and if it's like the S alnifolia I've seen around here it would be a slow grower.

Crataegus punctata perhaps? Common throughout central MN. Reportedly some trees with sparse or even absent simple thorns on branches.

But shouldn't the branching habit be more horizontal than ascending? Seems like it's ascending based on your pics. And who would sell it and plant it in a parking lot? Unless it's a volunteer, I guess.

I don't know much about any Sorbus not called Mountain Ash. And, like above, who would sell these other types of Sorbus in Minnesota specifically for a landscaped parking lot? Is this in the Twin Cities or someplace up north?

Pictures are pretty blurry. Taken with a camera phone? Try using "portrait" mode for closeups. Seeing a picture of the bark near the base would help as well.

It looks like there are lighter colored bark lenticels in some of the photos, which also makes me lean toward Sorbus.

A number of them are In planter boxes at Mills Fleet Farm in Brainerd, next to the gas station. I would think these were decorative specimens meant to decorate the parking lot. Probably installed many years ago judging by the size. The only Sorbus in Mn have compound leaves.
