Thinking about replacing or removing this rug. Help please?

I like the rug but not here and not with this ottoman.

Clashing patterns aside, this is also our backdoor so anyone that comes in with shoes on tramples all over the rug as its the first thing they hit when walking in.

Advice and ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

remove the rug put a door mat. im not sure why there is an ottoman there if that is a heavy traffic area? put a door matt out side so they can wipe their feet first.

I wouldn’t call it high traffic per say but yes i agree the rug should go. There’s an ottoman there because it’s a living room.

Is that in the middle of a seating area? Can you show a wider shot of the area?

@M Riz yes it is. its somewhat of a secondary living room. will take a pic shortly.

Nothing beats a classic oriental rug IMO. They are timeless in design and can add a lot of color and pattern to almost any room.

IMO oriental rugs are not meant to be used for wet and muddy feet ever. I think the best is a mat outside the door and a small one that is washable right at the door as you enter and remove shoes , Is there an overhang or awning over this door ? I found when we placed a rug outside the door a lot less stuff was tracked inside.

Just a thought from a practical perspective, which would address the entrance and your young children’s use of that space and still look nice. Vinyl floor cloths come in all sizes and patterns, from vintage to modern and if interested, Pinterest has a wide variety and links.

If it were me, I would replace ottoman with a long, narrow style that has storage. It would improve traffic flow and allow more space for playing, if needed.

Better photo. pardon the mess - toddler and newborn lol!

    “ …newborn” … Congratulations!

I’d definitely want a soft rug there for playing on the floor. Get on Rugs USA or Rugs Direct and do mock-ups with any that catch your eye. I’d look for something that has warm tones, and with some gray in it.

And I’d get one large enough that you can have some of it under your sofa.

ETA: This photo is hard to mock-up (fish lens) … get one pointing towards the sofa and ottoman more, in regular mode.

For a seating area, that rug is too small, it should go at least under the front legs of the couch, not floating on the floor. Maybe a credenza under the tv with door or drawers to keep the kids toys, congrats on your baby ! If thats a rarely used door, treat it that way and decorate how you would w/o that door there, i wouldn’t completely block it tho. You will be past the toy clutter phase in about 7 or 8 years lol.

You can also get really cool baby play matts that link together https://www.yaymats.com/products/brooklyn-cross-white this one is 6x6 for 80$ you could double that and just make one the size you need, would also be easy to maintain.

Hi. Imo, try a heathered rug in a practical material, and storage ottoman. The tan is nice, but from a photo only, seems too soft and warm-colored for the grey sofa.

Here's runner only 2'4" wide for entry. Then 'area rug' ?

I'd like to see what happens if you need to keep rug, but turn it the other way. Place a similar look of runner by the door.

Curious is this the only living room, seems like it might have been thought of as something else in the floor plan?

No this is a secondary living room. Was an addition that was used as a bedroom way back
