Replace the chest and shelf unit with modular pieces from IKEA to cover the wall. It can be their closet units or other storage units that fit the space. Look at all of them no matter what room they say they are for.

Look into modular units that you can give the look of built in or go custom. Photo below shows how it can be worked around window. Window seat could be optional but a large drawer under window could be used as a hamper.

@apple_pie_order I have never seen a light/shelf combo like that. They are pretty neat, thinking it might be just enough space to put a cell phone or pair of glasses. Also never occurred to me to have the door swing outward but it would definitely make a huge difference if that would work.

I know we all hate these bedroom pieces, but I have been playing with the idea to repurpose. You can find the entire bedroom on craigslist for free or very inexpensive. There is very good furniture paint at Lowes or HomeDepot. Paint it white, remove the mirror and replace with art or shelves. Put large baskets on top. Definitely change the hardware.

With self adhesive spray, fabric the entire piece! If you are not handy, I am sure someone in your community is and would love to tackle this project.

Put a low dresser on the closet wall and keep the window walls clear.

Elaborate on the window treatments, making them luxe. Extend the poles 6" on both sides past the window frame. This way you can use beautiful fabric panels and sheers underneath allowing a full view of that lovely lake.

If you can, open the entrance door out, as someone has already suggested. A great idea.

The window treatments must go from ceiling to floor. It makes a big difference and makes the room look bigger.

Get an area rug.

You might look into a bed with storage options, along with a shelf/dresser like in the second image.
