French doors? Other windows are replcement windows w/ minimal frames?

Hello All,

I am moving into a 100 year-old condo that was rehabbed on the 90's and plain white one-over-one replacement windows were installed all over the house. The adjoining dining room has two small doors (open-in) that lead to a small deck (2nd floor). I would like to replace the doors with a "wall of windows" - perhaps 2 french doors and a French panel? I know doors can't be too wide because they open up to a small dining room.

Questions -

1. do you think French divided-lite doors and

panel would look odd in a house with basic white windows with minimal frames? There are no other windows in the dining room and the l.r. windows are not that visible.

2. The deck is quite small: 4' x 9'. Do I have to worry about French doors overpowering the deck?

I need more windows than are there now so it won't feel cluastrophobic.

3. Windows and deck are North facing. Not ideal, but any issues with North facing French doors?

Anything can be done...but you are looking at a much more involved project than I think you have conceptualized just yet. That wall contains structure and the beam and design to support that large a span, if even possible (i.e. if there is mechanical or plumbing in that wall), will be significant. I don't see the cost benefit analysis here...but that is just me.

This LR and DR seem anything but claustrophobic! They are filled with light from the windows and the skylight, the bright, white paint lets your decor shine, and the high ceiling expands the space. I love these 2 rooms: they are modern but very warm and welcoming. I don't think that a "wall of windows" would be worth the cost/construction hassle, as they would lead out to a pretty tiny deck. If your view is to die for, then maybe, but the doors are already glass, so you are getting light. Also, if this is a condo, I am sure that there may be HOA considerations that would prohibit changing the exterior appearance. I love French doors (and have 2 sets with sidelights in my own home (FR and Master, both leading to large patio/backyard with a pool), but I am not sure they would be worth it in your lovely (and historical?) condo.

Check your HOA regulations first. As the previous poster said, it is unlikely that this would even be allowed, although you won't know for sure until you check. I also agree that changing this would be a large expense relative to the gain; however, this is subjective. It might be enough of a difference for you. I don't think divided lights here when the rest of the windows don't have any would fit.
