What to do with this sad look?

Bought a brown sofa instead of beige to get a contrast to the white walls (im renting). Then I got this persian rug as a gift. What to do now?? Looks sad. Had orange pillows in the sofa to add warmth, but with the rug it looked tacky..

HI - First thing I see , is your view -- Wow , where is this -- looks wonderful ! The rug looks nice from what I can see but if you don't like it in this room , can you use it elsewhere ? I think you could make it work by pulling some of the color out for accents such as pillows etc. on your sofa . I think I can see a pretty blue in the rug , make that your main accent color . Blue is great with brown .

Wow what a view! Anyway, I would probably get some modern artwork with navy and cream colours to tie in with the rug colourway, and perhaps some pale cream cushions to also tie in with the cream in the rug and brighten the sofa. Good luck!

I think you're on the right track with some pops of color - bold tones (like the orange you suggested or perhaps a red to play off of your rug) or even some creams to play off of the walls. I would also consider, if you don't already have and I can't tell from the photo, adding some lighting to the mix. A table lamp with some color or a floor lamp might really help. Hope this helps!

What is tall table by sofa? Add a dark wood modern coffee table 24" or bigger. Take a color from rug for pillows, I see blue, red black. Use all those colors to add to sofa. By a few . Add panels to each end of slider only. Go black. How can a room lok sad with that view? Add floor lamp in stainless in corner.

We have a grandson named Brekken, after a village in Norway. Maybe he needs a brother named Bergen!!!

Communicate with the landlord and ask if you can PAINT. It may well be that you can paint a different color as long as when you decide to move that you paint it again back to the original color. The landlord gets the benefit then of a newly painted space when you leave so he or she does not have to do it. If you can paint the walls then you can surely embrace the awesome view of the bay and brighten it. I agree with the color choice of using exact colors from the carpet to connect the sofa chairs and overall room.

Thanks David; which color would you paint the walls in that case?

If allowed to paint, go a latte. Then make panels on window ends a cream.

Latte could work but I'd be more likely to treat the scene out of your window as an art piece. Frame the wonderful view with light colors from the boats and buildings on the bay, then duplicate them with accessories like the colorful lamps above. Your color palette is probably right there in the carpet. Do the curtain panels with a solid maybe water blue near the bottom 2' band then complement it on the upper. Don't be afraid of color. I see you like orange. Objects on table outside.

A neutral paint color must have some vibrant BIG art on it. Or simply paint a nice bold color. It gets dark soon in Norway so happy colors will help.

I agree with David. Your focal point is the view - highlight it.

Your outdoor chairs are blocking the view. Can you switch them to the left side so only the low table is between your eyes and the view?

The pillows I bought before I got the rug was in silk; bright orange & red with a bit of gold on them. The candles outside are also in a bright orange color. So it just seemed a bit wrong with the toned down traditional colors on the persian rug ??
